I eventually want to get my machine running with 2GB of ram, and have seen on ebay memory modules for laptops goin for around 275US$. Curious if the advertised IBM T42p models with 1GB of ram have two 512 chips or a single chip.

To get 2GB it will mean ill have to junk and sell the two 512 chips if that is the way they are configured.

Single chip of 1GB ram is equipped, and 1 slot is available.

IBM is not like Dull which would ship you 2x512. They always configure notebooks with only one DIMM slot populated unless you specifically tell them to do otherwise or effectively make them do otherwise, eg. 768MB = 512MB + 256MB sticks. Gotta love IBM not being cheap lamers like Dull & Co.

Not that factory RAM upgrades are ever good buys, but I think Dell usually give you an option of 2x512 or 1x1024 (the former obviously being much cheaper). Considering how inexpensive Dell systems are, it doesn't seem out of line to provide that kind of choice. :) I'd happily bite the bullet for free slot, but not everyone will.

I with you Kenn b/c down the line when you want that extra 512mb or 1gb and you have both slots filled up you're like oh man!
