Restoring links and bookmarks in MS Internet Explorer: How?

#1 Post by uberT » Wed Dec 19, 2007 9:43 am

OK, it would seem simple, but doesn't appear to be in practice. I am setting up a new computer and trying to figure out how to copy my old bookmarks/links/favorites from my old machine (no longer runs) to my new machine.

I've learned that IE has a specific Import/Export function, but you've got to be able to run the program to use that and that's no longer an option for me.

I've tried copying the links from the old machine, but they loose their functionality when copied to the new machine. The link is still there but it's been converted into a "shortcut" to the original link and all URL info is lost.

When I initiate the copy process, I get a warning that some data may be lost in the.

I'm copying the file Documents and Settings\username\Favorites

Thanks for any suggestions.

Just copy the favorites folder from the old machine and replace the favorites folder with it on the new machine. Try zipping it and unzipping it.

Somebody at technology support stumbled upon the cause and repair this morning. Something about permission not being granted for me to view/share the files. He zipped thru a bunch of setting screens, I think at the folder level, and the machine churned for a few minutes and all links and bookmarks came back to life ! Life is good !

Now, if only I could get this BS with the "widescreen" sorted ...
