Ask the part # of ultrabay 2000 hdd caddy for A31p

#1 Post by stingbandel » Wed Dec 19, 2007 6:45 pm

I am interested in adding another hdd on my ultrabay 2000 slot.

What is the part number and where can I buy one? My laptop is IBM Thinkpad A31p 2653

I look at ebay and some of them sell it really cheap while the others sell it quiet expensive.

Also there is another seller saying that he is selling not the original one.

So how do I recognize if this one is the original one or not.

Thank you

Sting

This is what a genuine IBM Ultrabay 2000 Hard Disk adapter (FRU 08K6067) looks like, outside and inside:

The knock-offs usually have a hole in the bottom of the adapter. Like this one:

Also, if you look closely near the IBM logo, you will see "For IBM" on the knock-offs.

edit: And no, I have not tried/purchased any of the cheaper knock-offs so I can't comment on their performance or fit.

If yes, I'm gonna buy one from them. Please let me know.

I have run across a issue with these HDD adaptors .. have several.

The problems appeared when I bought a set of Seagate 160GB HDDs to upgrade my A31p machines. I realized after I received these that when used as "slave" they need a jumper. I need to be able to install these HDDs as slave when cloning my 'master' HDD.

The HDD adapter however comes with a connector that is full width ... thus no room for a jumper.

So I was looking at workarounds ... a) cut down a jumper to about 0.5mm (0.020 inch) high -- virtually impossible to handle (add or remove). b) to cut away the two pairs of pin sockets on the HDD Adaptor connector to make room for a standard sized jumper -- and now that Adapter does no longer work.

Anybody with a suggestion?

There should be no reason to do any of that. The BIOS takes care of it. If it's set as secondary, it looks like a slave, if it's set as boot, it looks like primary and the built in looks like a slave. What's the issue? I've done several clones with these. Did you TRY IT?

I have now installed my cloned 160GB Seagate into another of my TPs .. in the slave position. Here it works, all partitions are visible.

One difference I noted however is that with the clone installed in slave position some apps have problems ... asking for re-registration. When removing that HDD from the system those apps function OK as is. My Hitachi HDDs did not have this problems ... at least it never hit me in the face.

Since I am using cloning as a back-up strategy, that is also capable to quickly get back me up and running in case my primary HDD crashes. I insert the cloned HDD in the slave position to recover an occassional data file (lost / over-written / modified).

So now I am puzzled about the Seagate HDD behavior .. in my initial install TP it did not behave .. in my second it did. In the meantime I have sent my first A31p for service .. so have to await if it will recognize the 160GB HDD as described above.
