MSCONFIG; ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS

#1 Post by owbert » Thu Dec 20, 2007 7:16 pm

Has anyone else fiddled with the start-up services via MSCONFIG?

I want to try and remove as many start-up services as possible without disabling: 1) HD airbag, 2) Battery Meter embedded in taskbar, and 3) Wifi locator and detailed info.

I know for 2 and 3 they are a bit redundant since winxp has them, but i like it :).

Also, am i able to remove all of thinkpads advantage installed software via add/remove without effecting the abilitiy to restore the hard drive / os to original factory settings?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Since you are specifically asking about MSCONFIG, I've moved this thread from the Z conference to here in the Windows OS conference.

I only use MSCONFIG to disable malware since most, if not all, of the programs and utilities you mentioned have their own method of controlling if they are launched automatically. You are certainly free to disable the utilities from within MSCONFIG but I would recommend going to each program's configuration settings and disabling them that way.

rkawakami,

thank you for the welcoming!
i am happy to be a new owner of a lenovo/ibm laptop (zt61).

i believe i will play around with the msconfig services when i get the chance, and if i am daring enough. and of course i will report back.

p/s.: ty for moving it :) i thought since it was specific to the laptop, the services that come installed with the series, that it would be under that thread. my mistake.

msconfig is very reliable way of diabling startup services. however most of the time i use strun (same as msconfig but shows pictures of what you disable) and procexp (shows your currently running processes).

I've read somewhere, perhaps here, the msconfig is not the best tool for configuring services. Autoruns is a more versatile tool

Users of the Spybot anti-Spyware utility should note that there is a good System Startup maintenance tool in the "Tools" section of Spybot.

Cheers,
