One part left after reassembly of my T42p - what is it?

#1 Post by yesitshans » Fri Dec 21, 2007 6:52 am

Last week my good friend 2366-5AU got a new base cover, it
had been damaged on one side.
The disassembly was no problem thanks to the excellent
HMM IBM is providing.
But minutes before I removed the motherboard, I turned
the 'pad over to have a look at the bottom, and one funny
soft plastic part fell on the table.

I took some photos of the thing:

My question: Does anybody know what it is and where to
put it? I couldn't find a spot inside the box that looked like
the peace belonged there.

Thanks a lot and happy holidays,

Hans

That's not too tough.

It's the microphone tunnel! I'm not sure if that's the real name for it, but it sits atop the microphone on the motherboard, which is just below the left hinge. The round small side goes toward the sky and the rectangular bottom side fits around the hinge area. The tunnel lines up with the upper keyboard bezel, just below the two microphone slits which are above the ESC key. The tunnel directs sound to the microphone.

Thanks underclocker, sounds good to me!
I'll install the thing back to the T42p on the weekend.

Thanks again,

Hans

Ok, now I couldn't resist this one. Here are some smarty-pants uses for the part:

1: stick one of those matches in it, and use it for your next romantic candle lit dinner.
2: use it as a match holder for cooking a hot dog.
3: (well, those are the only two I could come up with....)

Light the little hoop with the match and use it as the 'ring of fire' in a flea circus :).

Well,

thanks for the suggestions what I could do with the little
thing, I thought of s/th like that as well ;-) .

But I hoped to solve another problem I had after putting my
nice T42p together again:

Every time I take the 'pad up on the lower left and the upper right corner it dies immediately. Hitting the power knob doesn't help, only a total power-off (incl. battery-out) will revive my T42p.

I fear its a cold soldering joint somewhere, any more comforting thoughts by anybody, please?

Thanks,

yes frankiepankie,

that's what came into my mind as well - but lucky me, I got a 3 years
9x5 NBD when I bought my T42p.
But now I've gotta talk the service guy into ignoring my own
"servicing" on the thang...

Happy weekendholiday,

Hans
