I just restored my T41
Hello,
My system ( T41) was down so I installed a second intance of XP on it using an XP install disk from a Dell.
Once I got the second instance working, I was able to recover my data from the original, IBM instance of the OS.
At this point, I had a dual boot option.
Then I "restored" my T41 using the IBM recovery disks.
Is the second XP installation (from the Dell disk) still on this puppy? Does using the recovery disks, erase the whole drive or just the IBM instance.
Now only a 55 GB size reads on my hard drive. It a 60 GB. If not, why does the 60GB show-up in windows as 55GB drive?

Several GB would be the new recovery partition, the rest is probably due to the HD manufacturers size calculation - see this explanation (Consumer confusion) -

the only way you can look at the recovery partition is with a partition editor, but you wont be able to browse/explore it at all. its only accessible when necessary.
not to mention that 1gb is not actually 1000mb, its 1024mb, therefore the marketed size of the drive will differ from the formatted size, however the capacity of the drive remains the same.

GParted can't see it, and I regard it as an exellent editor. I'm more interested in learning if what I desribed could actually happen. Now it's just theory. It's not a big deal, I'm not pressed for space. As I indicated, I deleted a SERVICEV001 partition last night, which was always clearly visible. Although I needed to disable it in the BIOS. I've read other posts relaying the 5G difference in a HDD's size after a reinstallation was the result of the (hidden) service partition. If so, why can't I see it? Did the reinstallation simply leave the old service partition intact and create a new one along with the OS?

This is rediculous. What's the old command for fdisk? How do I execute that? I am going to just do that and get it over with.
Like I said I did a second rescue and recovery. With no apps or anything else installed I started with 44Gb's with a 60GB drive. Thats BS!

there is a way to completly format your HD using RR. simple restore from back up will not do the job. you have to select option "restore to factory settings." of course you might not have IBM provided CDs but you don't need them instead after formatting is done reboot your computer and use your own back up CDs to restore the system.
