Arg, my T40 is going insane - crashes, hangs, BSODs.

#1 Post by K. Eng » Thu Nov 18, 2004 3:49 pm

My ThinkPad is going crazy.

I keep getting ati2dvag errors that freeze my system and cause it to revert to VGA/8-bit color display mode. When I reboot I get BSODs (infinite loop, device problem or driver problem, stop 0x000000EA).

Sometimes the screen will go blank for no reason, even though the machine continues to run.

I'm going to back up my files. And then I'm going to call IBM. Any other suggestions or clues as to what this might be?

I haven't changed the drivers or anything since Sept and the system was more or less stable for Sept Oct and Nov.

That's a known issue, however I am not sure if the the latest MB bios exacerbates the problem. Random blue screen of death "hard" errors that persist even with recovery from hidden partition. Curious.

I managed to boot back into Windows XP and get a report from Microsoft on my crashes - the error log didn't say much except that it was the ATI driver.

So I downloaded the latest Radeon/FireGL driver from IBM and installed it. So far so good. No crashing, no errors, no wierd messages or blue screens. But I lost about 250 points in 3DMark2001SE :(

Edit - (*#@! everything checked out, so I decided to take my machine elsewhere to work. As soon as I disconnected the AC adapter I got a BSOD claiming the ATI driver died again. WTF. :x :x :x

Yeah. I ran PC Doctor and it claims everything is ok. The machine won't boot without a battery installed, and if I run it on just battery, the LCD flickers sometimes and the display freezes sometimes.

I can get the machine to boot if the battery and AC are plugged in, though the video still isn't stable.

I am not a happy camper right now... I need this system for work and this is the second time its broken on me.

the systemboard must be replaced. btw, don't let them use one with 'reconditioned' parts or skip burn-in before you get it back

How would I force them to not use 'reconditioned' parts?

Besides, I don't think any company would go to the hassle of repairing a motherboard for reuse. It would take forever to find the problem and it might be impossible to fix.

believe it.

mine went back and forth -- until one of rade engineers (they get referred to your case after two airborne round trips for same problem) stepped in and let me know. i could be perturbed by it, but practically speaking i perhaps don't really take issue IF the reconditioned ones have been burned in!

btw mine didn't have that ati2dag error until i sent my thinkpad in to repair a broken usb. only after systemboard was replaced in order to repair this did i have the hard-error bsod antics. since getting a new systemboard all is well ... good grief.

So I was supposed to get my shipping box from Airborne Express today. I go to check the tracking # and it says "attempted delivery" call [1800 #].

So I call Airborne and it turns out EZServ gave them the right street address but the wrong apartment number.

WHAT THE ($*#&! I had the service representative read back my address after I gave it to him for verification precisely because I was afraid this would happen. I need my [censored] machine repaired YESTERDAY and now there's a chance I won't see it until after Thanksgiving.

Way to go, EZServ :x
