R52 desktop problem (Windows-related?)

#1 Post by colin » Sat Dec 22, 2007 4:46 pm

I have an R52 (and have owned it for almost exactly two years). I update it regularly; both Windows updates and via SystemUpdate for the IBM software.

Yesterday I did a SystemUpdate and now I have a somewhat strange problem.

My Thinkpad is configured not to hibernate when I close the lid; it merely turns off the screen. Now, when I close the lid and re-open it, the program windows which were left open are in all kinds of different positions, and are even different sizes.

I cannot for the life of me think what would have caused this, except maybe new ATI drivers.

I realise this is a minor problem, but it's massively irritating! If anyone has the same problem or knows of a solution, I would greatly appreciate some advice.

Many thanks

Update your BIOS and then reinstall video drivers from lenovo:

Thanks very much for your help, however, I downloaded the non-diskette BIOS update and when I reboot it tells me "the diskette in the default drive will not run on this system." even though there are no CDs in the drive or USB drives attached.

Any ideas what might cause that?

What is the 4 character machine type of your thinkpad R52? You can find it on the back of your thinkpad or look it up in PC Doctor.

Based on that machine type install the BIOS from the following link:

Drivers and software - ThinkPad R52.

You may also need to update Embedded Controller Program, please read the installation notes for that.

It's a 1846. Based on that I looked up the appropriate BIOS update, downloaded it, and it refused to install because "an update is not needed at this time." So... hmmm.

New video drivers didn't do the trick either.

Seems like your BIOS is already up-to-date.

Do you have Presentation Director installed? If so then look at the following thread:

LCD resolution changes when I close the screen.

Here is a utility that can help you also:

Desktop Restore.
