T40 fan control

#1 Post by Goldberry » Sat Dec 22, 2007 11:56 pm

I wanted to play some games on my t40 but am finding the unit runs quite hot. Touchs over 80 with COD, Max Payne runs a little cooler low 70's
I downloaded Fanspeed program and it doesn't show any fans and no way to use it to control speed.

Does Fanspeed not work with T40's? Any programs that will?

Any suggestions on how to make games run cooler, I changed screen to 800x600seemed to help a bit?

I have tried tpfancontrol and it seems to have a conflict and closes.

Has any one used Speedfan with the T40?

You might also want to try Notebook Hardware Control (NHC). It will manage fan speeds and also allow undervolting of the CPU (I saw my load CPU temps drop ~15*C with undervolting). There should be a thread about NHC elsewhere on the board.

Thanks Tim, I am already using NHC and find it works great when I am on battery cutting down voltage and screen brightness automatically.

I haven't been able to figure out or see how to manage fan speeds. If you or someone else can give me a heads up I would be very grateful.

I remember you need an ACPI file and edit it to your motherboard serial number to make it work on NHC.

I've found TPFAncontrol is easier to use, I recommend installing the program as a service, I've running both NHC and TPFANCONTROL SVC 0.18 with no problems at all.

Here is the link to the TPFC I use:

Thanks but I was using TPFANCONTROL SVC 0.18 and it was conflicting with some program. I had assumed it was NHC but maybe it was osmething else.

XTR, many thanks for the link. I just downloaded it and it seems to be working very nicely. My T43 is running @ 47 degrees with no fan in Smart Mode. So far so good.

Am I right in assuming that in Smart Mode things will default back to BIOS if either the temp gets too high or the computer fails for any reason? In other words, that I don't need to worry about ending up with no fan cooling if something goes wrong?

Hi ingolf, it's been a while I access the forums here.

Welcome to the forums, it's a great place to be here.

To your question, I haven't had any issues concerning TPFanControl SVC failing and hence not activating the fan, I had once issue though but I think it was because a massive amount of viruses took over my T42p OS. You can set the program to revert to BIOS embedded controller mode if temp goes past a certain value. But I'd say running it as a service is good to go.
I've been running like this for more than a year now, everytime I reinstall Windows I install again the TPFancontrol.
During Winter time the laptop is very cool, but now in the summer even though the program helps, the CPU temp is always the 50-52C range. But works fine, never use TPFan Control without installing it as a service.

Appreciate the reply, XTR. Everything is still working beautifully.

I'm anything but a boffin so I hope you won't mind two questions arising from your reply:

1. I assume what I downloaded from the site you'd recommended is in fact the service version?

2. How do I set the software to default to BIOS above a certain temp or is that already programmed into the Smart Mode?

cheers

Ingolf
