Quick disk management question...

#1 Post by Crunch » Sun Dec 23, 2007 3:25 pm

My C: drive has 28GB's and XP on it. It's got 10GB of free space. I'd like to move that space to my E: partition where my Vista install resides.

WTF!? When I try to "Shrink" the C: drive (partition size 28GB), it will only let me do 342MB's, even though 10,000MB's (10GB) of space is unused. What gives here? And why 342MB? :?:

Thanks for any replies. :)

Perhaps defragment is needed before shrinking?

what are you using to "shrink" and move the free space. I've used V.com's Partition Commander for years, (since version 8 i think) and have had great success with many different tasks.

sugo: Really? I use Diskeeper, which is supposed to always keep everything defragged, which it usually does. Great thought, though! I'll do a manual defrag, and try again! Thanks...:)

Kyocera: I use the Disk Management tool in Vista. I had always used Partition Magic before I moved to Vista, and I am not sure if Symantec has bothered to make it Vista-compatible thus far.

V.com's Partition Commander? Cool. I'll check it out. I am going to assume it's Vista-compatible? Thanks for the tip!!

I am trying to basically get rid of XP, so I'll leave a barebones version on the C: partition with nothing installed, and shrink it down to as much as it will let me. What do you guys (or anyone else) think? Good idea? Better solution?

Thanks again! :!:

You can also delete XP's pagefile and hibernation file. This makes it easier to defrag too :)

If you are trying to get rid of XP then delete the partition, and then expand the Vista partition. I believe that shrinking in Vista does not permit one to shrink to zero free space.

I thought about that. What will happen to drive letters? XP is on my C: partition, and Vista on my E: drive, a Primary partition, and C: is the one set to active. :?:

to sceintore: Thanks. :) I had already disabled the paging file, as well as hibernation. The defragging and attempting to shrink did not work, which I kind of expected.

Kyocera. Partition Commander looks awesome! I tried to "Compare" to other apps, and that area is very limited. I'd love to see a comparison to Partition Magic, which I've been using forever. Last time I checked, however, it still hadn't been Vista-compatible, which I found disappointing on the part of Symantec.

Is there a trial for this at all? I always like to try before I buy. ;)

Thanks all! :!:
