Can somebody help me with ThinkPad 760XL ???

On start i must appologize , but my english is poor , i learn it . . .

I have IBM ThinkPad 760Xl , and i have few question about this laptop :
- what is biggest disk that can fit into this laptop , i have 6 GB TOSCHIBA HDD , can i put 15 or 20 GB HDD into this TP
- is there any possibilyty to speed up the cpu (standard as anybody know is 166 mmx) overclock it , or replace it by other cpu
- is there any posssibilyty to replace the standard "easy setup" bios with standard bios like award bios or phoenix bios (i hear that is possibilty to do that . . . )
- is enybody have a thing called "hardware maintenance diskette" , this diskette on ebuy costs about 19 dollars (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 3482693925) , and on ibm homepage about 7 dollars , can enybody send a image of this diskette onto my email (grzegorzmax@interia.pl) the problem is not in costs of that disks but in this - i live in poland , that disk probably never reach me , and the costs in dolars for me are x4 or more . . .
- is any possibility to place into my laptop a mpeg 2 accelerator that is mounted into a 760 xd and other models with mpeg hardware acceleration , and tv signal grabbing , and what this give me i mean , is this speed up playback of film or clips in mpeg 2 compared to laptop without this hardware accelerator

1. Maximum size hard drive the 760XL will accept is 6.4GB. The BIOS will allow 8.0 GB, but the standard 8GB drive is 8.1 and won't work. The regular Thinkpads.com Web Page has a process for allowing larger drives to work using an overlay process (no flames, please!).

2. Maximum memory is 104MB, using 1 64MB module in the right hand socket and 1 32MB module in the left hand socket. If the 64 is not recognized, slide the little switch over the other way; I forget whether it is supposed to be left or right for the 64MB.

3. I know of no way to put in a BIOS other than IBM's. You can flash the BIOS to the latest version (available from IBM's Web Site), but you are stuck with Easy Setup (which isn't really that bad). Note that the BIOS is fully Plug and Play; you can't change much at all.

4. The maximum processor for this computer is a Pentium 166 MMX. It is soldered to a non-standard board located deep within the computer. Sorry, you cannot change it for something else.

5. The MPEG accelerator for the XD only works with the XD, and the 765's. You must basically replace most of the innards with 760XD parts to take advantage of this. And you will have to change the display to a 1024x768 LCD panel to work with the XD video. The 760XL has an 800x600 LCD panel, which won't work on an XD (I already tried!). Btw, I think good playback of MPEG requires a faster processor, like the one in a 770X (300MHz) or better.

6. You can download an image of the Hardware Maintenance Diskette. I think Bill keeps one here. I can't find the file name with my image, so I hope somebody else can put that up.

today i looka what is this "maintenance diskette" , and what this give to me , i like my laptop wery much , i bought them with destroyed keyboard , 32 ram , and no system preinstaled i put some time into this laptop and money torebuild it , at this momenthe has alredy newest bios from IBM website , the newest bios activate in my laptop "hot swap" function , and probably prepares it for windows 2000 , that says IBM website , the fact is that the plug'n'play in this laptop is very very advanced at it realy works , i thin about buyin a Wireless LAN card for my laptop , i alredy have such things like nokia card phone 2 , xircom rex pro 5001 , and ofkorz 3com megahertz classic lan card , the laptop is working wery fine , and i am proud of it , he has amazing dos sound blaster sound support , after i instal win 98 se i can play dos games without going in this games to setup , beacuse laptop set port to 220 , irq to 5 and dma to 1 , and 75% of old games has this options preinstaled as defaults , i playing at this laptop fine old dos games like duke nukem 3d , or albion or even carmaggeddon 1 or 2 , on parties i launch clips and mp3 like from regular pc computer , this laptop is very mobile , and with 2 batteries he live about 4 hours ( i have li-ione and ni-mh batteries) , i put much heart into this laptop , and he is now in excelent condition - like from schop or museum ;-P , now i have a problem wit ram memopry modules , i have 32 and 64 module , but i put it in any combination , the laptop didnt any time show 104 mb , allways it give me a 81 mb , the 64 mb kingston memory is allways detected as 32 mb , is this possible ? is this laptop or memory fault (this memory dont pass the bios memory test , but is working fine , laptop is stabile and is never hangin up , ) i must use 80 mb instead of 104 for now , mayby this memory is not compatible , but seller of the memory says me that he must work , i bought this memory on internet and i dont have health to return it and wait for next memory , 80 mb is not bad what i realy want in this laptop is a bigger disk , but if there is no possibility for that i must forget about this . . . i wast thinking about buying a docking station , i heard that is a possibility to put into it normal hard disk drive , and next question is what is the largest drive that this doc station can support

Try to reseat the memory and switch thier places. I have a spare genuine IBM 64MB EDO SO DIMM Non-Parity modul. If you want I can send it to you via airmail for free. Just send me an email with the address you want me to send it. I have tested it in my 760XL, worked great, so this should work for you too.

64 MB Module goes to right. 32 MB Module to left. Slide switch must be to left. (I just checked my old 765D). All modules must be EDO.

The drive limitation is based on the computer BIOS. No IDE drive larger than 8.00 GB will be recognized. (Actually, they will be recognized; by the amount larger than 8 GB, 16 GB, etc. I put an 8.1 GB in a 760 and it was recognized as 100 MB!)

You can put any size SCSI drive in the Dock and it should work.
