My X30 fan is dying. I'm mechanically competent and can read the HMM, so I just want IBM to send me the warranty part. They say it isn't a customer replaceable part, and can't send it to me.
I don't want to part with my laptop for a week (EZServ). And, I don't trust some authorized service center to touch my computer (and they'll take a week just to order the stinkin' part).
Is it impossible for me to get part? In the past, IBM has sent me other non-CRU parts, so I don't know why the fan is an issue. Should I just keep calling, or talk to a supervisor, or is it hopeless?

I dont know for thinkpads but warranties are normally voided if you open the product up.... so might ruin future warranty repairs??? maybe. but ibm's are generally business machines, so if you say you have important work stuff and cant part you never know what they may do. I would try talking to a manager.
Maybe you can agree to take it to a repair place to show that the fan is not working properly then only take it back to get an install once they have the part?

Opening the TP will void your warranty (it's practically impossible to cover your tracks to hide the fact that you did, they have a trained eye or two).
I agree with AKD, imply an absolute need of no prolonged break from your TP and it may escalate the repair.
