Problem with serial port on 600E & Win2k...

#1 Post by wrybread » Wed Dec 26, 2007 8:32 pm

I'm having trouble getting the serial port to work on my 600E. I just installed Win2k and in device manager next to the serial port (reported as com4) it says "This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources".

I disabled the IR port, but still the comport won't start.

Using the Thinkpad config utility I get the error when enabling the serial port "The following device(s) is not working or the drivers for the device are not loaded properly: serial port".

I suspect a few things:

- it's possible that what's being reported as com4 is in fact the modem, not the serial port. In which case, how to get the serial port to appear in device manager?

- it's also possible that I need to install the chipset drivers, which I haven't done since there doesn't appear to be anything available on Lenovo's site.

Any hints?

There are no chipset drivers for the 600e.

My 600e shows the following resource assignments in Windows 2000:

Serial port COM2 03F8-03FF IRQ 4
Infra-red 02F8-02FF IRQ 3
Modem COM3 03E8-03EF IRQ 7

This is the way Windows assigned the devices automatically.

This is an unusual configuration but it works and avoids resource conflicts. The default for 03F8-03FF is COM1, for 02F8-02FF it is COM2, and for 03E8-03EF it is COM3. COM1 and COM3 ordinarily share IRQ 4 and COM2 and COM4 share IRQ 3.

Can the serial port be enabled if the infrared and modem are both disabled?

No, nothing will enable the serial port.

And the modem isn't installed. When I try to install it using the drivers called "ACP modem driver II for Windows" I get a BSOD.

Interestingly, there are no drivers for my soundcard on the Lenovo site. In Device Manager my soundcard is listed as "Crystal SoundFusion(tm)", and my midi device will never start. I don't miss the midi, but maybe it's related? What's the soundcard in yours?

The part number for my 600e is 2645-8AU.

The driver matrix for the 600e is at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-3TLQ2L

As you said, the audio drivers are part of the operating system. MIDI support is affected by the modem driver. If you can get that installed I think most or all your problems will go away. The modem driver is at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-3ZBVUV Be sure to read the text file as it describes different installation procedures depending on what driver is already installed.

The audio device is the same in mine as yours. It's integrated on the motherboard and I think it is the same for all 600e's.
