T41 GPU - socketed or soldered?

#1 Post by lewdvig » Fri May 28, 2004 11:35 pm

Just wondering if any of you guys have cracked your t41s open. I would like to know whether the GPU is soldered or socketed.

I can not seem to find a config that I like up here in Canada. I want a 1.5 and a Radeon 9600 - but the IBM Canada webiste wants $4k for one like that. I thought I might be able to roll my own if I could get the parts - unless I need to replace the entire logic board.
Current: 2016 Lenovo X260, 2015 MacBook

It is soldered, unfortunately. I'd like to be able to easily replace the Radeon 9000 in my T41 too :-\

Would you be able to unsolder it and place the new one in?

way too many pins and in a very delicate area... take a look at some of the pics Anandtech did of the motherboard (top and bottom) from the T40 when it came out. I believe Bill has a link from his page (it's the FIC/Dell/IBM review-- they dismantled them all)

That would be a tremendous upgrade.
It would allow most, if not all, games to run at native resolution with 4xAA 8)

Unfortunately, it's not going to happen

I believe they are talking about the GPU(soldered) and not the CPU (socketed).
Thinkpad T40 2373-19U, winXP pro. Added: 256MB RAM, Samsung 80GB HDD. Switched mini-PCI wlan module intel 2100 802.11b to Intel 2915 ABG, with 1802 hack :)

Yes, by IBM Notebooks, you can not change the graphic card like by DELL or Alieanware Notebooks.
