Fedora 8 on T61p

#1 Post by gss6 » Thu Dec 27, 2007 10:08 pm

Trying to install Fedora 8 with the Install DVD.

Start install with textmode, since I know the non-binary drivers dont work.

Run media tests....passed.

loads a few drivers, 3 of them, including at_piix and ahci, then sits at a blank blue screen, am I doing something wrong, or could this be bad media even though it passes? I do not have a dvd burner here to make another disc.

Try boot in safe graphic mode.

If the DVD passes the media test then it is ok for sure. You can switch to other consoles with Ctrl-Alt-Fn, somewhere there are the syslog messages. Might help in debugging your problem. Worked fine on my T61 (non-p).

I have F8 on my T60, but I'm using the vesa driver, which should also work for you, except you won't have 3D. That's a great place to start, so you might try doing a regular GUI install.

It does not even get to a point where the video becomes an issue I believe.

It freezes after these syslog messages:
Set to load pcmcia module
Set load done

and on the other log screen its loading a SELinux policy

I turned off SELinux in my boot options and it errors out sooner and worse (junk on screen)

It freezes on the "Welcome to Fedora x64 screen with nothing on it except the <tab/alt-tab> and the other instructions, when I try them I get nothing new.

I wonder if F8 is having trouble with Intel's storage matrix. Try changing the SATA mode from AHCI to Compatability mode. This is a must for Win XP unless you have the SATA drivers on a floppy during install.

Hi, I have the same problem with FC8 and T61p. Changing SATA from AHCI to compatibility mode did not solve the problem. Any suggestions?

tried the live cd?

i'm not sure if this would make any difference, but knowing i dont want an entire dvd's worth of software installed on my computer (like vista), i decided to use the live cd install for fedora 8 on my x61. It booted up and then i ran the install with 0 flaws. Maybe this would work out better for you?

I tried to do that, but FC8 live hangs too. Now I am downloading rawhide, maybe experimental version of FC will work. If not I will try to boot from FC rescue disk and install system manually. If it matters I am using 64-bit FC version.

I tried kubuntu and it works, so it seems to be fedora problem.

Have you tried 32 bit Fedora 8?

No, I only tried to install 64-bit version. The problem probably lays in anaconda. I booted my computer using boot.img from FC8, after that I choose install from DVD and I was able to go through installation till the end. But unfortunately anaconda made exception just before installing the first package. I will try with rawhide. It seems that my t61p is too new for FC8 :)

I tried 32-bit version of FC8, the problem still exist. I can pass all configuration but at the beginning of installation anaconda is crashing.

A few months ago I attempted to install CentOS 5 (part of the Red-Hat family so to speak, and similar if not the same installer) via DVD on a HP G5 and had it crash three times despite verifying the checksum and passing the media test. A new burn at slower speed (4x) installed fine. I have no confidence in that installer's media test. *shrug*
