Z61m rescue001 partitie master boot record missing

#1 Post by bijnsdorpm » Fri Dec 28, 2007 2:11 am

Hi , I was stupid to remove the pre installed xp installation. But I reinstalled the rescue001 partition from a friend, but I missing only the Master Boot Record (MBR) for that partition. I tried it with a copy of whoppix to copy the mbr from my friends pc (eg dd if=/mnt/sda1/boot.img of=/dev/sda1 bs=446 count=1) but I don't know for sure how big the MBR is ( 446/512 ????) Can anyone supply me with either a valid MBR for the rescue001 partition or can tell me how big the MBR is so I can copy it from my friends PC?

thx in advance .

btw ( I also didn't make a rescue copy when it was complete installed) :?

Hi bijnsdorpm, welcome to the forum.

You could try this solution. You will need floppy.

Hi Andy,

I tried that soluion already, but it will start the recovery program. From the menu options there is not suchs option for clean install.
Or if I'm wrong please correct me.

thx in advance

If I understand you correctly, you can start R&R by pressing the blue button or F11 and are offered the options to recover to factory settings or from a backup?
If you have the option for factory settings, you should choose it. The option to make a custom install, deselect certain features, appears after you have accepted the licence agreements etc.

if I mount de service0001 partitie under xp I can see all of the files.

what I did so far is:

install the new MBR with BMGR /Fbootmgr.bin /v
this will give me the F11 option (pressing ThinkVantage)

But when I fdisk only the service0001 partition XP is bailin out with
" can find autochk ---- blue screen ---- reboots itself"

Is the a way to start the recovery from the service0001 partition while it is mounted ?

I've never heard of or seen anything where someone has successfully attempted to run a recovery from a mounted partition.
Would it not be easier to ask your friend, from whom you copied the partition, if he could create a set of recovery cds? (If he already has done, borrow them). They will completely delete the hdd and create the service partition anew.
