X40 wi-fi card replacement

#1 Post by dainova » Fri Dec 28, 2007 2:00 pm

Product: ThinkPad X40 2371-8EU [change]

Original description: P M 1.2GHz LV, 512MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, Intel Extreme, IBM 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip, 8 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

In device manager still see it as Network Controller.

Tried all drivers for wireless from ibm, including most prominent 7rwc09ww.exe and others from the list below. All drivers from the list state that it's INTEL wi-fi drivers, and description says it's IBM's, does it make any diffirence ?
77wc39ww.exe
7rwv10ww.exe
7rwc09ww.exe
1ywc54ww.exe
7kwc27ww.exe

I also have UNKNOWN device, probably this is OK for SD slot

Tx for help

Did you read the driver limitation and installation instructions from the following page?:

Wireless LAN adapter software (ThinkPad 802.11bg, 802.11abg) for Windows XP and 2000 - ThinkPad.

Tx, Engineer

Now I did and still didn't find any of mentioned fixes on my installation,
I have as call BlackXP installed which is still showed as Windows XP SP2 on system page.
<<<
Click Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q826942 or Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q815485 if it is listed under Currently installed programs.
>>

so I'll try this now:
<<
Note: The following software must be updated when you install this package.

* Access Connections version 4.4 or higher
* Hotkey Features
o Hotkey driver for Windows Vista, XP, 2000 version 2.01.0703 or higher
o Hotkey Features for Windows 98/98 SE/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP version 1.24.0603 or higher
* Power Management driver for Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Me, 98 SE version 1.42 or higher

When you install the drivers, do you go to the following directory to run the actual setup after unpacking of the drivers by the first?

C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANATH\SETUP.EXE.

Also make sure the "Make" of the card is the same as the drivers you're installing for it. Open up your machine to look for the make, reseat the adapter as well:

Mini PCI installation movie - ThinkPad X40, X41.

If you bought the machine from ebay or similar sort of online website then chances are the Mini PCI has been replaced with another IBM brand NIC (capable of handling no-1802).

FYI, from first hand experience with that exact, and other, X40 models, the following internal IBM branded adapters will work fine;

-IBM / Intel b/g
-IBM / Atheros b/g
-IBM / Atheros a/b/g
-IBM / Atheros a/b/g II

The specific IBM part number varies for all of the above, but all should work.

The following will not work for sure;

-IBM / Intel 2915 a/b/g

Produces a Code 10 device error that can not be remedied.
T510, i7-620m, NVidia, HD+, 8GB, 180GB Intel Pro 1500 SSD, Webcam, BT, FPR Home
T400s, C2D SP9400, Intel 4500MHD, WXGA+, 8GB, 160GB Intel X18-M G2 SSD, Webcam, BT, FPR Travel

Also, make sure the model you get is mini PCI, *not* mini PCI-E or mini PCI-Express, as those are physically incompatible with X3x/X4x Thinkpads.

Alternatively, a PCMCIA or USB wireless adapter may be cheaper and easier to find.

Tx all,

I have INTEL WM3b2100 802.11b installed that doesn't work, so I think that I already tried right driver.
There is nothing about IBM written on this card though.
