What part do I need? *PIC*

#1 Post by Domain » Sun Dec 30, 2007 11:06 pm

Not sure how I did this one. In the course of carrying my T43 in my well padded bag, I somehow managed to bust hinge screw cylinder hole. If you look at the back of the T43 near the parallel port, on the top screw hole if I look inside, I've busted the cylinder itself and it has broken on one side. What part would I need to get, or should I just live with my hinge flopping around? I'm afraid of causing further damage... and not to mention, it's very annoying.

If your T43 is still under warranty they may cover this type of failure.

Otherwise if I understand your issue the hinge has broken. Replacement hinges are available.

I'm a year out. If that is all one piece, woo. Would a picture of what I'm talking about help?

Any suggestions on where to get the part the cheapest?

I have seen hinges for less than $50 delivered.

I think you may have to buy a pair though.

Check eBay.

I would like to see a picture. Assuming it's the hinge, it is not trivial to replace. It is easy to crack the LCD bezel and it is hard to get the antenna wire right.

Notice the break on the right hand side I was talking about.

It looks broken to me. I was looking around and I couldn't find a spare hinge lying around. I'll keep looking. Is this the one by the parallel port?

Broken? No kidding. :D

Yeah, by the parallel port, top screw. Well, the top screw used to be there. Without it, the hinge on that slide flip flops more than a politician on a lie detector.

It appears that the left side hinge needs to be replaced. The part connects with one screw on the inside and the two of which one you are having trouble with on the outside.

This hinge has those three screws that I just mentioned and three that attach the hinge to that side of the LCD cover and two screws that attach the hinge to the LCD.

Look at the hardware maintenance manual for full details.

Of course this is not an impossible job it will take some patience though.

I have not seen one with that exact crack. I have seen some broken clean off though.

Taking apart the machine I managed to damage the palm rest.. the LCD was a pain to get apart, so I just left it. Scratches and dings later, the machine works but needs a few more new parts. Sigh. The palm rest on the right side busted two screws somehow. Dunno how I did that, but I did. Le Sigh!

A generous benefactor just bought me a T61 tonight. Haha. I was asked to repair the T43 for a hand-me-down, but at least now I can take my time getting the replacement parts at the price I want. I wanted to retire the T43 after this semester or next anyway.
