Boot from USB harddisk?
I've upgraded my disk and put the old one in a usb-box. Is there a possibility to boot from the old disk and get my old windows installation on that disk running again? The simple solution to choose USB HDD as booting device doesn't seem to work

Re: Boot from USB harddisk?
The question does not clearly describe your desire. Do you want to run strickly off the USB drive? If so, it must appear as drive 'C', assuming your original installation (old disk) had Windows on drive 'C'.Czechnology wrote:I've upgraded my disk and put the old one in a usb-box. I believe you need to describe/explain in detail what you desire to accomplish and how you are trying to accomplish it!

yes, you're right - i want to run the OS installation from the USB drive. It used to be C.
So, what I'm trying to do - run the old installation just as if haven't switched the disks. But from the USB disk.
Am I being more clear now?
Is this possible?

It may be possible although Microsoft says it does not work. Visit http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 read the tutorial and then use the link to the forum.

Re: Boot from USB harddisk?
If I understand you correctly, what you want is to clone your old HDD onto the new HDD. For this purpose you may use the program Acronis True Image, which is discussed in many, many (many!) threads in this forum; see e.g. Confirm info for upgrading hard drive in T42, see the posts of Sat Jun 30, 2007 11:39 pm and Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:45 am. You may download a fully functional (15-day) version of Acronis True Image. Alternatively, see the thread How I Cloned My IBM ThinkPad T42 Hard Drive - Step by Step. You may also search on this forum after "Acronis True Image" - and many hits will come up.Czechnology wrote:I've upgraded my disk and put the old one in a usb-box.
