DVD burner - will Pentium III 650MHZ work for a 8X burner?
DVD burner - will Pentium III 650MHZ work for a 8X burner?
I was just going to buy one of the state of the art notebook dvd burner which was a 8X when someone told me that it may need a little more horsepower then what I have to run the DVD. Is that really true?
Short answer: Yes
Longer: The data rate may be a little more than your disk drive can handle. BUT, all the new drives have buffer underrun protection, so it should run as fast as your machine can handle without creating coasters. Just maybe not at quite 8x. Then again, 8x might be just fine.
How fast is your disk, in sustained MB/s?

Harry,
I don't have a DVD burner for any of my 600X machines, but I doubt you'll be able to get more than about 4X.
I've got 24X CD burners in two of my machines and they rarely go over about 18X, more often they're at 12X.
Regards,
James

whizkid, James,
I got a email back that the price was misquote! It is around $240 more then the quoted $110. So I found it on Ebay for $150.00 but did not bid on it!
I will look at a reduce 4X and hopeful meet the $110 that I was willing to spend on DVD burner. Even maybe a 2X.
How do you take the front plate off of drive anyways. There is a foam backing between the drive and the bezel. Is there a switch to release it like in the new notebooks; or is it glued on?
Thanks!
Harry

Harry,
IBME that every optical drive manufacturer has their own way of attaching the bezel and no two are the same. 600 series drives are particularly difficult to deal with as the bezel is conformal to the machines, rather than just a flat piece of plastic as seen on many other machines.
Even drives from the same manufacturer may have differing attachment methods.
All one can do is address each drive individually and trim the bezel if necessary to fit.
