'Unknown device' & Suspend software
'Unknown device' & Suspend software
Over the Xmas period I've been building up a working system on a TP600 (2645-850) which was bought without a hard drive or any kind of recovery software. It's my first Thinkpad, so there's been something of a learning curve involved with the various drivers and patches, but - so far so good (with some help from this forum - thanks !) - and only 2 outstanding problems remain to sort out:
The first isn't critical, and involves an 'unknown device' which is detected during the boot process. I've tried deleting this device in the System Manager (WIN98SE), but it's swiftly found again on next boot. Windows can't find any drivers for it, and I can't find any means of detecting what this device could be, in order to supply the drivers !! Whatever this 'unknown device' might be, it doesn't appear to be critical to the system functioning, and I could simply ignore the problem if needs be. But it's a puzzle - so can anyone offer advice on how I might go about resolving this ?
If it's relevant - the TP600 passes all the F1-Setup system tests ok, and I've disabled modem, gameport and IR using the Config utility.
The second 'problem' relates to the Hibernation/Suspend-to-Disk function. As I don't have the original software or hard drive, I've no means of knowing what flavour of S2D software IBM uses for the TP600. Can anyone advise ? I've left space on the HDD just in case a special partition needs to be created.
BTW - is it possible to source copies of original software (e.g. IBM's S2D or PHDISK or whatever it's called) via this forum without breaking any rules ?
'best, Colin

OK, first off, here is the driver pagefor your specific TP600.
Second, can you post a screen shot of your Device Manager, so that we can see what is and isn't listed? (Note: be sure to add a Pic warning to the original thread, so that you remain within forum rules and guidelines. If you just post a link, it might be easier)

Thanks for the reply.
Yes - I've visited that page (quite a few times) recently, and have downloaded all the drivers, reg patches etc. listed, and have installed same. I'll have a stab at taking a copy of the Device Manager tonight.
None of the drivers etc. include Phdisk - although I've just located a copy on Lenovo's site for another TP - with luck it might be compatible
?
Appreciate your help.

Re: 'Unknown device' & Suspend software
During a Windows 98 install on 600 series machine, you will end up with at least three question marks in Device Manager I think. Each should go away after you install the appropriate patches/drivers:SAE140 wrote:Whatever this 'unknown device' might be, it doesn't appear to be critical to the system functioning, and I could simply ignore the problem if needs be. 1. Hard Disk Controllers: Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
- should go away after you apply the apm2apm.reg patch
2.Other Devices: PCI Communication Device
- should go away after you install/upgrade the modem driver
3.Other Devices: PCI Multimedia Device
- should go away after you install/update the sound card driver ("audio features")
Do any of those match you unknown device?
Phil.

Ok - first of all the 'unknown device' - whilst taking a screen shot of the Device Manager I poked around that area and discovered that an unknown device was reported to be using I/O ports in the ranges 0130-013F and 02F8-02FF, IRQ's 3 & 10 and DMA 07, so by x-referencing this info it transpires the device in question was the modem. So re-installed the modem, and all is well with that one.
(Have just seen your post Phil - 3 yellow question marks on initial install is spot on - all gone now)
But with regard to the Hibernation snafu - I've failed miserably to coax any of numerous Win98SE installs to grant me a Hibernation facility on this TP600, using the install files from an OEM WIN98SE CD onto a clean HDD.
I've even tried installing the new system onto a FAT16 partition, for although IBM say:
"Hibernation is only supported on ThinkPads when the hibernation file is created in a hard drive partition formatted as FAT16, FAT32 or HPFS."
(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... FAN-3VXSNV )
The Win98 Help file states that a WIN32 partition is NOT supported.
But - neither FAT16 nor FAT32 installs will produce the Hibernation facility, so it appears that this issue isn't the underlying problem.
I've been playing with an existing Win98 Compaq Pressario install on a 3Gb partition (FAT32 of course) which DOES show the required Hibernation tabs, so I know what you guys are talking about and what I should be looking for.
I'm tempted to gradually delete 'stuff' from the Compaq disk until I get back down to a core system with which to work - but then, this still doesn't answer the question of WHY I can't produce a Hibernation facility from a regular install onto a clean HDD.
Anyone got a crystal ball ?
To get hibernation working, you should be able to use the IBM power manager control panel, and turn on "Enable Hibernation". When you press Fn+F12, it should work.
I'm wondering if I'm missing something essential here ? I've installed the latest Config package (A-1.55), but there's no such "Enable Hibernation" option showing. The only references to power savings are the Standby and Shutdown options in the 'Alarms' section.

I think you're working with the "Configuration utility", but what you actually need is the "Power management" utility, aka Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management features for Windows. After you install that, then you should see additional tabs pop up on your power settings tab. Most of the other features described for that download, including the Battery MaxiMiser itself, will not actually install on a Thinkpad 600 running Windows 98SE, but you still need to install this set of drivers in order to get some key power management functionality.SAE140 wrote:I'm wondering if I'm missing something essential here ? I know you said you already installed everything, but it doesn't hurt to triple-check. The page tfflivemb2 pointed you to is an excellent resource, but I would reocmmend instead that you use the following page as your primary reference to find all your latest downloads for your Thinkpad:
Drivers and software - ThinkPad 600, 600E, 600X
If you can't find what you want on that page, then go back to the other page and see if you can find it there.

Not having a CD-drive, I'd been transferring drivers over to the ThinkPad's D: partition via Total Commander's Port-to-Port facility using a laplink cable, then installing them methodically one at a time. But somehow (aka 'a Senior Citizen moment') the Power Management stuff got transferred into a sub-directory of a sub-directory - so I never spotted it, and thus assumed that 'everything' had been installed !!
The machine now works 100% - absolutely bl##dy brilliant ! No need to install PhDisk or anything else.
This kind of helpful support was one of the reasons why I chose the Thinkpad over the dozens of other used laptops on the market.
Thanks for sticking with me on this - VERY much appreciated.
