Loose Screen on A31p

#1 Post by iv76erson03 » Wed Jan 02, 2008 12:18 pm

My screen has about a 1/4" of play in it when it's open. My R50p did the same thing. It's doesn't affect anything, but it doesn't feel sturdy. Is there any way of tightening this and is this a common issue?

Sounds like the screws holding the display (two on each side on the back wall, and one on each side in the computer base, accessible after removing the keyboard and bezel) have become loose. I would check and tighten them before doing anything further.

Can you define this? I tightened the four back ones and that helped but the silver arms going down to the board are what mostly moving. Where are the other two screws inside the thing that you speak of. I can't find them.

Sorry, I was going by what I know of the A2xp series, and the hinges are attached differently in the A3xp series. The Hardware Maintenance Manual shows only the four screws holding the hinges to the base. Otherwise, the square plastic bays for the hinges in the base may be loose or broken. Since removal of the display doesn't appear to be particularly difficult, I think I'd do that and inspect the bays. At the same time you could see whether the hinges themselves are loose. If it really is wear/breakage/distortion of the bays, you could try wrapping the hinges with some (metal?) foil to make the fit tighter and reduce movement, but otherwise you might have to replace the base and that would be quite a bit of work.

Maybe this helps a little, and sorry again for the initial false information.
