X40 works with SDHC!

#1 Post by brianoes » Wed Jan 02, 2008 1:47 pm

Hello to all,

After playing with my new (well, used) X40 for two days, Newegg decided to drop off my new 8Gb SDHC card. I had done some research on what little information was available on this topic, and I had thought that I would have to search for an IBM or Microsoft driver fix to make it work, and even then, that would disable regular SD cards from working.

But, curious person that I am, I stuck in the card after a few pictures from my Canon and sure enough, I hear the familiar "Bee-boop" of windows recognizing a new drive, and it shows up in its entirety in windows, all 7.5Gb of it! I see this as great news, as now I can use it with my Canon camera with no worries on the road, without the need to carry a PCMCIA adapter or USB adapter.

That is very interesting. Pushes SC storage capacity from 4 GB to 16 GB. Used google to find someone reporting SDHC working in X41 as well. I'll give it a try.

Could you report actual read/write speeds, please?

The SD reader in my X41 does work with a 16 GB SDHC card.

Windows XP requires Hotfix 934428.

Linux Kernel 2.6.22.13 can read/write files or directories to an existing filesystem (FAT32). However, partitioner cannot read the media. Deleting, creating, resizing or formatting partitions is not possible. This behavior is not limited to SDHC. It is the same with non-SDHC 2 GB (FAT16) and 4 GB (FAT32) cards: Read/write works. Partitioning does not. All operations do work when using an external USB SDHC card reader instead of the internal one. Could be a PCI vs USB issue.

It is great that 16Gb SDHC is working on X41, i am thinking of buying 32GB SDHC Class 4 for 120 $, i would like ask you about sd reader in your X41. I have 4GB SD 150x (non SDHC) and at first it was not working. Than i downloaded some drivers from lenovo and MS and it was ok althought SD reader in X41 is terribly slow. But then i reinstalled Win xp sp2 on my X41 and downloaded drivers for working my 4GB SD (non SDHC) card and when i explore SD card in explorer with thumbnails it eats all performance of processor to make thumbnails on sd card and laptop freezes, for example music stop playing, etc. Before i reinstalled win it didn t happen. Now i have win XP3 i think there are newest drivers for SD cards, but there is no change still freezes and eats a lot of processor performance. If it is working well on your x41 could you write me what exactly drivers and hotfixes you installed? Thanks.
