T61p with Vista and sudden slow internet

#1 Post by wgleich » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:48 am

Folks,

I got a new T61p with Vista Home Premium loaded just before xmas. 2.4ghz and 2gb ram. Out of the box the internet on wireless using Firefox or IE was slow. After poking around for a bit I found the power management settings on the wireless card was set to converse battery so I changed it to Max Performance the that immediately fixed the problem. Recently, the machine got slow again for internet on wireless only. This morning I tried to use a restore point from when I knew the machine was fast and that ran but said it was unsuccessful. BTW, my T30 sitting next to the T61p runs fine on same site same time. I think that maybe the Thinkvantage is causeing a problem but before I dig deep and remove things I am looking for opinions. I am close to downgrading to XP if this keeps occuring. Below is the build specs if that helps.

Thanks,

Warren

hmm, are you using access connections for wireless? How about you remove it and just let Vista handle it. Also what about drivers, you have the ABGN card so check to see if there's anything for that.

Thanks much for the suggestion. I went and looked for a new driver via Vista device manager and it said it was the latest and greatest. On a chance I rolled back to a previous version and the problem now appears to be gone. I am at the public library which supports "G" networks so I won't know till I am home on my lowely "B" network.

I will post a followup in case people are searching.

Best regards,

Warren

People still use B at home?

You made me laugh out loud in the library and I got the scowl from the librarian. Ah yes. At home we basically surf and it has been fine for that. Although now I have experienced "g" speed I will be [censored] about it all night.

8) My job is done haha. I remember when I was at home and we made the transition from B to G. It was pretty much a chorus of angels, etcetera.

even if all you do is browse internet then G will help :) If you have a nice fast cable modem and only using .11B you'll be stuck waiting on pages to load because of the still slow downloads.

I'm sure you probably noticed your pages poped up faster when you were at the library :)

The pain point is going to be all the cards ...

#8 Post by wgleich » Thu Jan 03, 2008 2:58 pm

I have these old bomb proof Cisco cards that are "b" cards only. I am running four laptops around the house right now and two tivo's on the wireless. Now the Tivo's have b/g usb cards but I will need to replace the Cisco cards in addition to the Access point. As I understand any "B" traffic will cause the network to slow to "b" speed even though they are "g" devices. Am I correct in that understanding?

The can of worms have been opened....

correcto :) Unless you get a N router which you probably should instead of buying a G one. No point in getting G if N is coming now.

Just to add an opposing point of view, I don't see how using a 'G' rather than 'B' wireless card will make much of a difference when it comes to Internet access. If your "nice fast" cable modem is only sending you data at 4 mbs, it doesn't make much difference whether your wireless connection is 11 mbs or 54 mbs. Your cable connection is the limiting factor.

Theoretically, yes.

In practice you'll see much more throughput via G over B.
