R50P : enough power for Second Life ?

#1 Post by p78 » Thu Jan 03, 2008 4:37 pm

I want to upgrade my old latitude c840 to a better UXGA laptop and after reading this excellent forum (including the thread here : http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=53287 ) it seems to me that the r50p might be a good choice (price, reliability, silent, cool ...) ...

Now my question : is the R50P powerful enough to run Second Life (the virtual world game) smoothly ?
(my c840 can't do that)

Thanks !

So it exceeds the requirements... dunno how "smooth" that would be though.

R50p is a great machine in my opinion, and probably the best buy within its generation.

I'm not a gamer, but if you don't want to spend significantly more money on a T60p, this is likely your best bet, since the video card used in it has been shared with T41p and T42p, the latter costing significantly more than R50p. And T43p is definitely not quiet or cool, while the V3200 card is not that much better than one used in the aforementioned machines. It also costs significantly more.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

I am about to buy a T42P (much easier to find in France than R50P) and I have one question : is it much less reliable than an R50P ?
(scared by the flexed MB and loose GPU problems)

Thanks again !

I've owned R and T series within the same generation and there is not any significant reliability problems with either.

If you handle the machine (as has been mentioned before) carefully.....like use two hands to pick it up so as not to flex the base when opened it should not be a big problem.

R50p is still my favorite..more muscular look compares to the t4X's...the LCD cover is the weakest part, it flexes on the LCD cover ...
the T series feels has a sturdier cover,
The R50 has a slight raised Palm rest that reminds me of muscle cars next to a T series, which is more flat..
the plastic material color is a nicer dark black vs. the T's grayish black...
excellent keyboard on the R50's ...
form factor is very good...but if u like slimness- T would be a good pick also.

I've owned a number of T42p machines as well as R50p laptops and both are great ThinkPads. Personally, I prefer R50p, but would take a good T42p anytime.

to answer my own question : i ve just tried second life on my 1.8ghz T42P UXGA and it ran smoothly. I believe it should be the same with an R50P as it's got roughly the same power.
