R52 BIOS update - Embedded Controller does not install

#1 Post by Pedro Fragoso » Thu Jan 03, 2008 6:19 pm

The machine is a R52 (1846-3wg), running XP Pro SP2.

I just installed the latest BIOS (1.29), no problem, using the software from the site.

This is supposed to only work with Embedded Controller v1.05 or later (v 1.06 is available); the Embedded Controller currently installed is v1.04.

When I try to install either v1.05 (76hj05us.exe) or v1.06 (76hj06us.exe), both non-diskette, I do not have a diskette driver, I manage to get to the Now Updating dialog, stating that the process will take 30 seconds, but the systems just hangs in there and nothing happens.

I tried this a few times and I always have to disconnect from power and take the battery out, to recover use of the computer.

I would really appreciate ideas about what can be going on here?!

Also, I would like to know if it is likely that I will have any kind of trouble running v1.29 of the BIOS with v1.04 of the Embedded Controller? (The computer seems to be working...)

Assuming that I will definitely not going to be able to install the Embedded Controller, should I forget v1.29 and install a previous version of the BIOS? Which?

Thank you for reading this and for any help you may provide.

Try downloading and installing 'System Update 3' and then update the embedded controller program from there.

Still no luck

Following your suggestion, I did it through the System Update Package, but the process seemed the same and I got basically the same results.

This time, instead of the hanging during the Installation phase of the Embedded Controller Program, I got an Unexpected Error message in a red box, and the system shut down after I pressed a key, as instructed.

I tried once more to do the upgrade manually, but this time, the program hanged before the installation phase, when after the warnings, it states that it is Reading the Embedded Controller.

Anyway, I did notice that the upgrade of the Embedded Controller appears on the System Update menus as an optional download (second tab), not a recommended one (first tab), so I hope that that does mean that I'm OK.

Anyway, I really would like to delve more into this and having some more considerations on the subject, if anyone is willing.

Thank you.
