T42P's have heat problems?

#1 Post by Padhead » Thu Jan 03, 2008 7:39 pm

Howdy Folks,

I am aware of the excessive heat problem on the T43P. Some folks say that it is too hot to sit on your lap. (I had a T30 with 2.2 Mhz so I can relate. It sure was fast though!)

Most T42P's don't have this problem, but how about a the newest T42p's with the Intel 765 (2.10 Ghz) processor? Most T42p's have slower processors. (735/745/755)

Compared to the T42p, the T43p has the faster frontside bus. 533 MHz instead on 400 MHz found on all T42's. T43's also tend to come with the 2.13 or 2.26 processor. (770 780) Perhaps these are the reasons for the heat or is it just any greater than 2.0 MHz processor? Please help. I have my laptop in my lap at least ten hours a day. On the T30 I had to use a small pillow.

The guy I am dealing with has about 100 hundred T4x's with flexview, so I can get slower processors on the T42P (745 1.8MHz) . Should I?

BTW, we are doing a "group buy". Mostly T60/1's & T42/3's with Flexviews since I originally announced it as such, but hundreds of other Thinkpads are available as well. PM if you would like some info.

First, let me say that I always tell people that laptops should not sit directly on your lap. It would be much better to set something rigid and flat on your lap, with the laptop on top of it. My suggestion would be something like a small plastic cutting board. Any laptop will cool better on a rigid surface.

Having said that, I have heard of more cooling problems with T43s than with T42 or T42p machines, regardless of their speed

Just want to make clear that no one is having heat problems with a 2.0+ MHz processor on T42P?

Thanks folks.

T42p with 2.1 Dothan is hot. With 2.0 is not. It is as simple as that.
And 1.8 is very cool.

If you're going for a T42p, best combination of temperature and performance is a 2.0

My experience only...mind you, I've had them all, and if I were to pick one to keep it would be a 2.0

AJ, I owe you one. Thanks!

I wonder if the T42p's 2.0MHz were available with 128 MB GPU's?

All T42p machines have 128Mb GPUs...the same goes for T41p, T43p and R50p.
