X-31 vs x 40

#1 Post by fjs08 » Sun Nov 21, 2004 11:09 am

Hi,

What's the difference between the X-31 and X-40 ThinkPads??
I'm looking for something small and portable.

Thanks.

Well they are both small and portable.

The X31 measures in at 10.7 X 8.8 X .98-1.16 3.6Lbs.

The X40 measures in at 10.5 X 8.3 X .81-1.06 2.7Lbs-3.2Lbs
(The X40 has 2 batteries it can handle 4 Cell Battery and the 8 Cell which adds it up to 9.3" in depth and adds the 6 ounces to the weight)

The X31 can handle a faster processor( as of now up to 1.7 P-M(Banias) and uses a standard 2.5" HD giving you options for faster rpm up to 7200

Whereas the X40 is limited(as of now anyway) to a 1.4 P-M(Dothan however) and uses a 1.8" HD with a maximum (as of now ) 40GB @ 4200rpm

Older X31's use PC2100 Ram, newer models have PC2700.
All X40's Use PC2700 Ram

The X31 has a firewire port and a Compact flash slot
The X40 has no firewire port but has an SD card slot.

The X31 uses ATI discreet graphics 16MB of dedicated memory.
X40 uses Intel Extreme Graphics 2 with 64 MB Shared memory
both of which perform very similar.

X40 also has the new Active protection for the HD
it's an onboard acellerometer that detects motion of the HD and will park the heads before a fall to save it from damage

So it basically boils down to which of the differences are important to you
and slight size and weight issues.

Thanks for the note. They sound similar. Do both have cd's for installing new software?? Do both have usb ports. I would assume yes for both, but I hate to assume. I have to wonder why IBM has two such similar units out there??/

Thanks again.

Neither have built in optical drives
Both require external optical drives or using optical drives installed in the
respective media slices X3 or X4 available
They both have USB 2.0

Don't forget that all X31's run their memory at PC2100, even with PC2700 memory installed.
