Is my computer dead?

#1 Post by Pocket Aces » Fri Jan 04, 2008 2:36 pm

So my T42p was sitting on a table, plugged in and logged off on Windows XP. Then I hear my dad say that it's dead. When I go over to look, he says that all he did was touch the top corner of the screen, and then there was a static shock. The shock cause the computer to power off immediately. Now it won't power on or respond at all. The power light doesn't even turn on when it's plugged in. Should I call funeral services?

Try unplugging the AC adapter and removing the battery. Hold down power button to 15 sec. Reconnect the AC adapter (but leave the battery out) and try to start the laptop.

Thanks, but that didn't work.

I cannot imagine how a static discharge to the lid could cause death, but it sounds dead. Do what Chris said, (remove battery and A/C) and push the power button, but push it several times (10?) holding it the last time. You are trying to discharge capacitors, so one push is not enough. If that doesn't work, I would remove the keyboard and touchpad, remove the CMOS battery, and try the same thing.
