Lenovo Power Manager and non-admin xp user - Fixed

#1 Post by dvg » Fri Jan 04, 2008 8:39 pm

Has anyone ever found a way to make this utility fully functional as a non-admin user on xp? I've done some searching on here and haven't come up with anything concrete. I've given the user permissions on the powercfg reg key in HKLM which allows me to set windows power profiles, but Power Manager is still useless.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

OK - So I removed the power management driver and power manager, restored the registry settings, and reinstalled both. I can create power schemes as an admin, but I cannot use any aside from the one it is stuck on. My OSD has ceased to function as well. I'm starting to loose my patience with this. What is Lenovo trying to do behind the scenes that makes this so complicated?

OSD is back after reinstalling hotkeys. Gotta love how all these programs are intermingled.

Power Management

#4 Post by egnyc » Sat Jan 12, 2008 8:27 am

I am having the same problem with an x41. Well sort of. I'm the admin to this tablet PC and for some reason all but two of the pre-loaded PM schemes have disappeared. ANy attempt to create new ones does not work. THey aren't saved. I have updated the driver and reinstalled the PM utility. Someone else in this thread talked about Registry setting but I don't know what they're supposed to be. One would have thought that uninstalling the broken PM utility and then re-installing it would have solved the problem but it does not. IBM wants me to either pay $99 to their support rep or else reformat my drive. They've got to be kidding about that.

FIX-

1. Login as user, kill all run32dll.exe, Go to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies] and delete ALL the policies.

2. Login as Administrator, kill all run32dll.exe, Go to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies] and delete ALL the policies.

3.Give users full control of HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Controls Folder\PowerCfg . Close regedit.

4. Open Power Manager as Administrator, then open regedit. Go to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies] Re-number polices starting with 1.

5. Set [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg]"CurrentPowerPolicy" to an existing number.

6. Logout Administrator, Login as user. Open Power Manager, create any power schemes you would like, don't worry about not being able to select them yet.

7. Open regedit, Go to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies] Re-number polices starting with 1. You may have inadvertently ended up with duplicates again at this time, delete accordingly so that you only have one copy of each scheme, including your own custom schemes.

8. Set [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg]"CurrentPowerPolicy" to an existing number.

9. Reboot. Enjoy a fully functional power management program.

Several attempts at the repair had failed results. You must follow the steps in order above to allow functionality at not only the Admin level but the user level as well. I must give credit for some of the steps to a "Michael Ma" on another website.

egnyc - I am reasonably sure this will resolve your issues.

Thanks. Couple of questions:

There are no user accounts on this x41 so I'm not sure what steps I can skip.

Not sure what step three means 'Give users full control'.

There is no: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control panel\PowerCfg]"CurrentPowerPolicy. This key has only GlobalPowerPolicy and PowerPolicies. GlobalPowerPolicy shows Default REG_SZ and under data it reads"(value not set)". Below this entry is Policies followed by REG_Binary and then a long binary string in the data column.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I was assuming you were in the same situation as I was. If you are the only user (running as administrator, which is a bad idea, but thats your call) go to http://chris.brandlehner.at/Brandlehner ... BRR-6YWBNV
and follow the directions given by Michael Ma that are similar to mine in the comments section.

dvg, thank you for this post. I was also interested in creating a custom power scheme in Power Manager with a non-administrative user, but I was stuck with the ThinkPad Default scheme. Your steps helped to fix that! I did notice that all the Microsoft power schemes in the Windows "Power Options" disappeared, but I guess there's no need for me to use "Power Options" if I'm using Power Manager.
