Multi-Burner Ultrabay 2000 DVD-RW Writer

#1 Post by selvan777 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 9:09 pm

Hi,

Would you agree that the below is a steal for a new Multi-Burner (22P7015) for a T23 and would you buy from this seller?

Thanks

A steal? No, but if you're not into transplanting a non-IBM "branded" burner into a Ultrabay 2000 caddy and probably performing some front panel trimming, then I guess it might be an okay deal. To my ZIP it's a total of $94 via DHL Ground (assuming no CA tax). As an example, I have bought UJ-840 and UJ-820 DVD burners for other laptops (Toshiba, Panasonic, HP, etc) for as low as $30:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0145090705

(Geez, that seller is now NARU  Okay, maybe that's not a good example.... but the drive still works!)

As far as buying from that particular seller, a 4.43 rating (out of 5.0) with over 39,000 transactions and a 10% negative rating in the last six months, equates to a 90% eBay score. I'd think twice, or at least page back through the feedbacks to find out why people were disappointed with their transactions.

Thanks for the reply.

Transplanting a non-ibm is probably something I could do but probably not without wrecking a couple first so I'm afraid that's not an option for me.

It's $94 for me too and with a price range of $88 - $320, I feel it's at least more than an okay price, especially since I'm not too confident in hacking one up to fit. I read the most recent reviews and it appears that there were mainly issues with batteries and a late delivery..not too bad.

Unless you're willing to assists in getting a much more inexpensive one to fit (I am good with my hands, just lack experience), I think I should go with this seller.

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

I've researched and searched all over the net for them.

IBM only refs the numbers 92p6013 and 22P7015 and searching ebay comes up with many multi-burners but none have those numbers so I'm thinking they will not work.

Am I wrong?

Check out eBay item # 110210664770...that's just the first one I bumped into, but will give you an idea.

ANY burner that fits UltraBay 2000 will work in a T23.

Hope this helps.

That is a DVD-Reader only combined with a CDRW. It does NOT burn DVDs!

Sourced off of eBay today:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0194826884 (HP branded UJ-840 for $41; shipped)

Assuming it is as advertised, I'll post a follow-up here in a few days. I also have bought another DL burner for the same price. However, there's a couple of more of them ending within the next few days so I'll keep that one under wraps for now :) .

It's not too hard to switch them out of their current setup. Typically, they will have a small mounting bracket at the back which comes off with one screw. You then take the Ultrabay 2000 rails and IDE connector (aka, the caddy) off an existing drive or buy them separately, and then mount them onto the "new" drive. Since we are dealing with the Ultrabay 2000, the new drive's front bezel will need to be trimmed to fit the "notch" at the lower right. Like this:

http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_t2x/u2k_bezel_mod.jpg

The top T23 has a modified bezel, created by using a Dremel and a cutting wheel. The bottom T23 has a standard Ultrabay 2000 drive

HP branded UJ-840 drive received today and checked out fine. Ran the CRC tests in DVDInfoPro for both a burned CDRW and DVD. Burned CDRW and DVD+RW disks and they verified correctly.

There was a small bracket at the back being held by two screws. Removed that and installed the rails and connector for the Ultrabay 2000. Had to remove the front bezel during checkout so the only thing left is to cut the notch and re-install the bezel.

Thanks for the posts but I think I'll just stick with my CD burner for a bit longer.
