System became slow after upgrading the RAM

#1 Post by gkarthik78 » Sat Jan 05, 2008 5:20 pm

Hi,
My Thinkpad T60 (2623D6U) became slow after i installed 1 GB RAM. Now my system has 1.5 GB in total. .5 GB in one slot and 1 GB in another one.

Is the unmatched RAM causing issues ?

regards,
Karthik

If you installed slower RAM that could be the issue, as both modules are running at the slower speed instead of one at the right speed.

The difference in RAM speed is not human-observable.
If you are running Vista, the cause is it. Vista likes to fetch a lot of programs to RAM. During the process, the system is very unresponsive but after that, you should see a small boost.
And, this only happens when you have more than 512MB of RAM.

Past: R40, X41 tablet, T60

A stick of DDR2 PC2-4200 533 MHz RAM wasn't installed by chance?

The T60 (and specifically the 2623D6U which sports a CD T2400) requires DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz RAM at the very minimum. Any faster RAM (i.e. DDR2 PC2-6400 800 MHz RAM) will automagically down-clock to the correct PC2-5300 667 MHz speed since the memory will not run any faster than the processor and system board were designed to run.
