I need a little help and kindess....

#1 Post by SimonCC » Sun Nov 21, 2004 4:28 pm

I am looking for a second hand/refurbished laptop for my girlfriend and i was just about to buy a t22 when suddenly i was bombarded - 'what!! It doesnt have usb 2.0 or firewire?? I must have one of those so that i can use itunes!' - [censored] it!!! Can anyone recommend an ibm laptop that i could pick up for around £450/$650??? Im adamant she sticks with ibm as sony, toshiba etc for around this price, on the second hand market, are awful.

Thanks

I had a T23, then a T30, and now a T41. USB2 did not happen until the T41. So if you are going back in time for a refurbishment as far as the T22, you may have to add a USB2 card if you want one. ... JDHurst

But a T22 DOES have USB 2.0 - Well, if you add a PCMCIA card it will have - piece of cake, and cheap too.

Next problem?

The T21 listed at the foot of this post is actually being used by my daughter at uni in Bordeaux - she has a USB 2.0 card I bought her for about 20€ (I don't know what that is in ounces) - seems to work fine.

arent the ipod usb cables backward compatible meaning that it will just run at 1.1 speeds if you have have usb2?

all it'll mean is that it might take a few seconds longer to transfer the files..?

Right. I forgot about the T40's. I jumped in my head from T30 (USB 1) to T41 directly. Cheers, ... .JDHurst

Not quite sure what you mean. An iPod will work with USB 1.1, but it will take significantly longer to transfer files. If you have usb2 though, the iPod will definitely take advantage. Using an iPod, between usb1 and usb2, usb2 makes a HUGE difference.

I don't think it's practical to use USB1 for the ipod. It would take ages.
If you go for the PC card option, you might also consider getting a firewire card instead, if you use it just for the ipod. You could use just one cable then (The AC adapter just has a firewire plug).

Yeah, if you can help it, don't use USB1.1 for an iPod. I used that with mine for a few months in my girlfriends ancient computer. I finally broke down and installed a 2.0 card, and WOW what a huge difference. It's completely amazing how big a difference there is.

But, if you have no choice, I use my iPod fine with iTunes using a 450mghz PentiumIII, with USB 1.0, and it always worked fine.
