Max Ram question in "other" laptop...

#1 Post by SaberX » Sat Jan 05, 2008 7:34 pm

A friend of mine has this laptop...
http://www.saveateagle.com/av6130h101.html
It's only 2x 256's of DDR333 (pc-2700) in it now.
He wants to bump up the ram.
BUT every where i look about the Max ram for this laptop it shows Max of 1gig(two 512's).
This laptop with a P-4 3.0ghz cpu should be able to handle two 1 gig chips.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
Or should i just look for two 512's for him....

I'm not positive about this, but I would think that two 1GB sticks would work fine. That's been the case with every P4, P4-M, and P-M laptop that I've come across (as long as it has two slots, like your friend's one).

There might be a BIOS restriction that could prevent it from using 2Gb...

Good price so i'm going to pick them up and see if they will work.
If they dont i'll put them up for sale or part trade for two 512's.

The user manual for the machine should tell you. The maximum ram supported info can ussually be found in the upgrading or technical specs. sections of the manual.

You could also try www.4allmemory.com They have an Active X control based program that you can download, which has always given me detailed info.

My hunch is that this machine only supports 1 GB RAM total.

I just went to the laptops web site and looked at the manual. It says it will take upto a 1 gig dimm in each slot.
I also went to kingston and looker up"Averatec 6100 Series".
It also shows it will take a 1 gig dimm in each slot.2 gigs max.
Looks like thats what i'm going to look for.

That's good news.

Be sure that you put in your specific model number. Sometimes different models in a "series" support different amounts of RAM.
So be sure to look up your model manual (AV6130H101) not another model from the 6100 series.

In FixYa, they have that model listed as having 1GB max RAM support. http://www.fixya.com/support/p362387-av ... c_notebook

I saw the information in the manual as well. It's a bit vague, but it looks like each simm will handle a 1 GB each. Hopefully it does!

There are two memory slots , I presume.

Thats the same thing i'm getting. Some places say 1gig total and others say 2 gig total.
By buddy who brought me the laptop to bump the ram just went out and bought a new cheap one .So he offered to sell me this one.It was a good price so i now have it.Just have to get more ram and a 7200rpm hard drive and this system will fly.
It has P-4 3.0Ghz with HT , 64 meg ATI 9600,15.4 widescreen.All the ports,firewire,usb2,ect.
It's not a Thinkpad BUT the bulid of this Averatec is realy good,Very solid laptop. And fast.I know the laptop from the day it was bought from my buddy and got very little use.Not a sctatch on it anywhere.Like new.Battery is good for about 1.5~2hr's.I dont except to get any longer from a P-4 3.0Ghz system.

The battery is in great shape.
Holds about 39.90Wh's out of full 44.00Wh's.
The video card is realy nice and fast The ATI 9600 64mb.

I'll use it for a bit then sell it again to get another Thinkpad.
As nice as it is , it's more of a desktop replacement.I do have the X30 for on the go but i think the T4x laptop is the best of both worlds.
