600E won't startup :-(

Hi

My thinkpad 600E won't startup anymore.

Symtoms are...

1. plug in AC adapter and the battery led flashes once (as per normal)

2. switch on, all led's flash together then only the HD and power led's stay on, fan starts up then slows down a bit, a bit of static from the speakers, no beeps.

3. Absolutely nothing from the lcd, or external monitor if I plug one in.

I've tried removing all the ram, HD, DVD drive, don't have a battery anymore, unplugged the CMOS battery. None of it makes any differance

Open to suggestions....

Just tried it using my bench psu putting 16v into dc connector and 11v into battery connections (to simulate a battery), exactly the same symtoms.

First, that's a sad way to join the forum, but welcome!

Have you checked the CMOS battery? Could be it expired and your BIOS needs reflashed?

CMOS battery shouldn't cause this problem..If CMOS is bad the machine should still boot up to a 192 error..


OK I'm just throwing ideas out now...

1) CPU might have went bad or become loose. It's a long shot but I have had machines in the past where I had to re-set the CPU.. 600e CPU plugs into a socket..

2) the built in 32 RAM might have went bad. There is a BIOS hack to bi-pass the built in 32 RAM..But since you can't even get to the BIOS this does you no good... So short of saying the motherboard went bad obviously I'm running out of ideas..

Tried both the upgraded PIII cpu that I recently put in (had been working fine until now) and the original PII that it came with, no difference

I must admit I'm thinking main board failure aswell , just was hoping someone would think of something to try that I've missed.

Is it possible for a sub-system failure to stop the machine working, I dunno lets say could a keyboard failure prevent the machine starting up the lcd ? or would the display just put up an error code ?

A bad Keyboard or trackpoint would give you beeps and errors too..8611 I think..Sorry..

I would definitely try replacing the CMOS first. An ill battery has caused all sorts of problems for me. You could still boot without the keyboard and it will give the 8611 error code, but have never seen a keyboard stop a system from booting. With no lcd and keyboard you should still get one beep from the speakers confirming POST. Can you test the RAM on another system. You didn't state if you had 2 sticks or just one. You could have bad onboard and one bad stick. Though unlikely to have all bad, onboard and 2 sticks.

I've tried with only onboard, one stick of 64MB in either slot, another stick of 64MB in either slot, both sticks in at same time, both sticks switched slots. Basically all combinations I can think of...

CMOS battery gives 3.06V

I think BillD has it, basically the motherboard has gone bad.
