Drive doesn't read blank DVD's? First time DVD burn...

#1 Post by dcdomain » Sun Nov 21, 2004 7:07 pm

Hey guys,

I have a 2373-3VU, and according to the specifications that would mean that I have a DVD-R/CDRW Multi-Burner (MATSHITA UJ-812).

I tried IBM's RecordNow! and Alcohol 120% and I can't get it to burn any DVDs. I never tried so I was wondering if it was a physical problem with the drive itself. I have successfully burned CDRs before with this drive. Anyway to tell if the drive itself is broken?

It's a brand new pack of Velocity DVD+R discs and I've tried putting a couple in. No luck. I don't have access to any other brands of media right now though. The disc will spin a couple of times, but the programs will insist that I insert a blank disc.

That burner will READ DVD+R but will not write to them. DVD-R or DVD-RW will work though.

[censored] these competing standards!!!

Thanks a lot guys... I'll have to familiarize myself with DVD media and buy the right type. I guess this spindle is useless.

Yep, the spindle is useless, but since you couldn't burn any, take the opened spindle back with your receipt and ask them to swap with the right kind for you. No refund, but most stores will exchange them if you explain that the wrong kind was bought.
