My R40e will not boot

#1 Post by Gothic » Mon Jan 07, 2008 10:58 am

Hi folks,
This is my first post so i hope i make some sense, here goes...........
I own a T23 & R40e at present.
Recently given a R40e by a friend who has upgraded their machine.
When the power button is depressed all the lights come on for a very short while then go off leaving two green lights illuminated, which i beleive are the battery & Ac power indicators, a slight whirring noise is heard before all the other lights go off, the previous owner of the machine did note that after approximately 20 or so attempts to power on the machine it would work, something i have yet to experience as i myself have had at least 30 attempts to no avail, can any member shed some light as to the possible cause to this fault and a possible remedy, would also like to hear from any member who has had a similar problem if and how the problem was repaired, appreciate any help given.
Thanks
Gothic.

Welcome to the Forum Gothic!

Even though I don't own an R40(e) I can think of a couple of things right off that will help you with it.

One is to download the HMM here. This will help you become aquainted with your new laptop and how everything is put together, how to take it apart and so forth.

Here is a link to a quick reference; http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R40e

Second is to (with power off, battery removed, brick unplugged from the power port) take the Mini-PCI card out, the Modem Daughter Card, CD-Rom/DVD, and then try booting up again just using the power brick.

Third, this sometimes works. Remove power brick from the laptop, remove battery, hold the power button for a minimum of 10 seconds then release. Nothing will happen. Add power and boot up again. Again, this works sometimes......

Good luck and report what you find. Hope it goes well.

I had that problem before and I had to have the system board replaced (and this happened to me again a few times so I ran into this problem more than once).

I never owned nor taken an R40(e) apart, I'm sure there is something I could find on the board that's causing it but.......... I wouldn't know where to begin without "seeing" it first hand.

Do you hear the processor cooling fan come on when you boot? If you do then that's ok, if not, that might be the cause but usually you'll see an error and then stop. Like "thePCxp" said, it's probably a board problem.

You could try reseating the processor....... if you had a spare processor I'd tell you to try that.....

Do you smell a burned smell coming through the keyboard?

Have re-seated the processor with no change to the machine.

Given a boot disk on Cd which i inserted into the drive ,the machine boots the cd/rom drive then shuts off when Fcn + F1 keys are pressed both at the same time the fan runs for about a minute then shuts off.

When the Fcn key is pressed and held down by itself a very faint beeping sound can be heard any ideas or should i just be prepared to
purchase a motherboard.

or is it worth trying another processor prior to a motherboard.

Ps: there is no burning smell from the key board.

Gothic - extremely bewildered. :?
