How to package laptop parts...

#1 Post by sunkssss » Tue Jan 08, 2008 12:45 pm

So I am planning on parting out my late T40. I have never done this before, so I had one question about shipping the parts I sell...

How do you best recommend packaging the delicate laptop parts? Thanks!

Get sturdy boxes that are slightly bigger than the item to be shipped.
The USPS has several size boxes.
Use anti-static bags when required (motherboards, graphics cards, memory etc.), and wrap everything in plenty of bubble-wrap, rather than using those styrofoam chips.

Here's a couple of pictures to show you how I like sending stuff:

Keyboard bezels were mounted to very stiff and thick pressboard and secured with tie-wraps. Areas which did not rest flatly on the board were shimmed with folded cardboard (middle left and right, top corners). Memory modules and wireless cards were wrapped in antistatic bags and taped to the board so they wouldn't go flying around the box. Both of these boards were then wrapped in bubble pack and put into a box large enough to have at least two inches of space from the bottom and top. Package was shipped from US to Holland, with an unexpected side trip to Thailand  and everything was reported to have been received well. Yes, I probably over-engineer my packaging but when you have received stuff like this:

I don't think I'm overdoing it :) .

Thank you very much for the advice so far! Only one thing... I'm not really sure where to get antistatic bags. Office Max? Staples? Should I order them online? Are they expensive?

Ah yes... source for AS bags... You might be able to find them at OfficeMax, OfficeDepot and the like. May also be had from places like Radio Shack, Fry's and any other electronic parts dealers, but not "big box" stores like Best Buy. I work in the industry so I can usually get some at work and I keep all of the ones I get when buying parts off of eBay. Yeah, eBay could also be a source as well.

You have a PM from me as well...

Ditto a few months ago. Absolute waste of my time since I was selling the laptop that the keyboard was intended for and it delayed the sale for a week.

I'm with Ray - overboard is so much better than adequate or less.

Wow, I really need to check my posts before I send them

but yes, packing should be taken seriously, I shipped a hard drive out with some High Imact (compressed) foam board with a cut out that kept the hard drive in place and protected it from being smashed. it was pretty much a foam shell.
i also shipped my laptops out in an 18" deep box wrapped in newspaper and then bubble wrap and then layered with foam peanuts.

Very good advice in this thread. All I can add is that you have to plan on the item being dropped and then kicked by someone along the way.

I can't tell you the number of times that I've received computers or computer parts that were improperly packaged and damaged during shipping. It's just painful to have all the small black plastic chips fall out of the box before you even see your purchase. Just painful.
