Port Replicator and LAN connection

#1 Post by mosley » Mon Nov 22, 2004 8:25 am

I have a port replicator for my T22. Can I use the LAN connection on the back of it to connect to my LAN? I currently use the PCMCIA card with the cable that connects into it.

If your T22 has a built-in NIC, you can use the connection on the Port Replicator (but then why use the PCMCIA card in the first instance). Otherwise, if the PCMCIA card is your only NIC, then no. If you don't know, go to the IBM PC Support Site:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
enter your model (e.g. 2nnn-yyy), and it will tell you if you have a NIC on board the motherboard. An RJ45 jack is another way to tell.

The reason I do not want to use the PCMCIA card is because the dongle cable (I think that it what it is called) disconnects often.

I went to the site and entered my model number but couldnt find the information...

I do have an RJ45 connector on the back of my laptop as well as the port replicator.

Mosley,

Open the mini-PCI port on the bottom of your machine and look at the card that's installed.

(Watch the Movie: http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-45923)

If it's a modem only card (only one cable connected to it), get a combo modem/ethernet card on eBay for as little as $10 and throw away the PCMCIA card.

BTW, what model T22 do you have?

According to the specifications for a 2647-7CU at the site I mentioned, it has a modem, but no mention of a NIC. If IBM doesn't say, it doesn't have.

"Original description: PIII 800MHz (256KB), 128MB RAM, 10.0GB HDD, 13.3 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 24x-10x CD-ROM, Modem, TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win2000"

So as James mentions, get a combo modem-NIC card, and then you can (1) discard the PCMCIA card and (2) use the NIC connection on the back of the port replicator. Very convenient. ... JDHurst
