Project category in the forum

#1 Post by r2d2 » Thu Jan 10, 2008 1:39 pm

Hi,

I am just wondering if there is a category in the forum where members can write about their thinkpad projects. Where they can share an experience from planning to getting it done.

An example of what I mean is like upgrading a 1GHz CPU into 2GHz (if that is even possible) or like putting an embedded wire antannae for a wireless X20. Member writes the model of thinkpad they are working on, the work arounds and alternatives and even where they got their parts.

I think it will be an interesting and fun and a good DIY reference for those who like to do projects but do not have the slightest idea what or where to start.
Best Regards,
Rosh

That does sound kind of cool.

Yup.. I think it's kinda cool but I do not know how it can be done without stepping on other categories like if the project is on an X2 or a T4 when there is an already existing category for these.

There are so many "projects" that, wherever we land, searching probably remains the best way right now. ... JDH

That is what I mean.. that it might add confusion to what is already existing.

On the other hand in addition to 'projects' category idea, a topic under this would just contain a subject of the project, a brief summary of what it is and a link to an external site (member's personal www or blog or myspace) showing steps (and pictures) of the project or mods from beginning to end. I have seen one link in one of the forum topics some time ago, I believe it was Ray Kawakami's wireless solution/modification for his 600 where he attached an external antennae to the unit... I think it was cool and interesting.

Given that, other members can view the external site as well as post comments, suggestions and questions (only specific to that project) within that category/topic.

Just an

Ray has done some really great work on providing photos and details of various items for the 600 series. You can find his external antenna project on his personal site.

I suspect that such projects still fit best under the relevant Thinkpad forum where they are now. But to pick up on your idea a bit, I've wondered about revising the "official upgrade" stickies that appear in the 600/770 forum and using the very first post of that thread to list all such mods with links to the relevant threads within the forum and/or offsite. Just using meaningful linked text would probably be enough without adding any summaries or descriptions. In the case of the 600/770 series the list would become part of a larger list of most possible upgrades and/or mods for each particular machine. Alas, I have not had the time to even begin putting together such a list...

Yes Phil... that too can do the job... I mean any sticky / topic / what have you... I dunno the term for it but such a place where one can go in and check out the cool stuff members do on and with their Thinkpads (upgrades / mods / works of art..etc)... where other members do not need to dig/search so deep but can jump into such topics directly.

On this note, could there be a flag or a perhaps a separate area for the "official" projects done "by the forum, for the forum"?

I could be under the wrong impression, but the only one I can find is the current one that Harryc is working on (A31p or such?). I'd love to browse through the past ones, but searching "thinkpads.com project" turns up nothing, so I could be looking in the wrong place.

Help appreciated. I'd just like to be able to find them.

The first project was on an R51 and is documented in this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=65847

I believe that your idea has merit, however I don't know if a separate sub-forum makes the most sense. For now, and I would assume in the future, these project threads can be found by the following search strings:

"thinkpads.com" project

The quotes are needed! Also, select the "Search for all terms" option. Furthermore, you can limit the search to the last 3 months and it will find the two threads that currently exist. Later on, one may have to adjust this time frame since the first thread was created in Aug 2008 and the last postings to these project threads will vary.
