Split between warranty on T42p, or just going T60p w/ IPS

#1 Post by sethstorm » Thu Jan 10, 2008 4:42 pm

I'm split between extending the warranty on a soon-to-expire T42p, or just find a T60p that has an similar (1600x1200x15") IPS screen. So far, service has been fine - but the sunsetting of IPS out there seems to make the choice a bit unclear.

(if this has to be moved, feel free to move it - but this is more about keeping the warranty going on the T42p or just going to the most recent IPS screened Thinkpad there is)

just out of curiosity, how much does it cost to extend the warranty on a t42p?

It costs around $180 for 2 more years of depot service.

If it was me I would go extended warranty route for another 2 years at approx $180. A T60p 15" UXGA IPS in A1 mint condition will probably set you back $900+ with possibly some warranty still left. Also it does not seem that many owners are parting from their T60p's with UXGA panels, so you could be in for long wait looking for one. Plus when they do appear they are snapped up instantly within hours!

Edit: Have just seen one for sale in the Forum members Marketplace

I have a similar dilemma on my hands...have a T42p with almost 2 years left on the warranty, but would love to get T60p...

Here is the math the way I see it, you can do your own...

For a T42p with almost expired warranty, you are likely to get between $600 and 675, depending on specs and condition. Add $180 and enjoy it for the next two years, bringing the total value to approx. $850 or thereabouts.

Buy a T60p for no less than $1,000 for any machine with some warranty left in respectable condition.

Basically, a $150-200 difference will get you from a good PM machine to a newer Core Duo unit. In my book, it is worth it.

Good luck with whatever decision you end up making.
