Does Lenovo Z60t support 7200 rpm SATA HDD?

#1 Post by rknotes » Thu Jan 10, 2008 8:27 pm

I have been using a separate 7200 rpm SATA HDD (Hitachi) for some time and recently started having issues like intermittent shutdown without any error.

So, I tried to format the HDD and tried to Restore/Rescue via a backup and it just kept failing during the process!

One analyst at IBM support mentioned that SATA HDD or 7200 rpm HDD may not be supported for Lenovo Z60t and that might've spoiled the HD controller!

Just wanted to check with you folks if that is accurate!!

(Only options seem a Ultrabay Slim Hard Drive Adapter ($29!) or SATA USB cable)

Thanks in advance!

That sounds silly. A hard drive will not ruin the controller unless it is broken (shorted out somehow).

No, the RPM has nothing to do with whether it'll work or not. Older thinkpads have been known to be picky on stuff like drive firmware, but I doubt that applies to the Z60t.

There's no reason why a 7200 rpm SATA drive wouldn't work in your machine. I've been thinking about putting one in my machine, but they eat more power than a 5400 rpm drive and my battery sucks as it is. Lenovo even sells 7200 rpm drives:

I didn't notice a change in battery life when I upgraded. There is very little difference.

Has anyone put in a 200GB in a Z61t?

I did install a 200GB in a Z61T - Hitachi 7200rpm 16MB Cache! Somewhat faster then a 60GB 5400rpm!
