Possible problem with MATSHITA UJ-842 on a T60p. Help needed

#1 Post by ckso226 » Fri Jan 11, 2008 2:19 am

-I have a t60p with the MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-842. The drive reads/writes and burns without a problem.

-When i go ahead and release the lock besides the drive to safely remove the dvdram drive, there is no message on my desktop saying that it is safe to do so (Even though there is supposed to be one).

-When i go ahead a pull out the drive, i hear the regular Windows sound message of something being disconnected from the system, which means that it was safely removed.

-However, when i try and put the drive back in the system, it is not recognized and i would have to restart the system in order for the drive to be recognized again.

So Does anyone know why i am not getting a "Safe to Remove Hardware" message when the tab is released and why the dvd drive is not being recognized when it is connected back into the system??

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated . Thanks.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I rarely hot-swap any Ultrabay equipment. However, when I have done so, rather than rely upon the Ultrabay release lever, I use the Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray.

From the sound of it, there may be a problem with the internal switch inside the bay which is triggered by the release lever. Getting to it involves a lot of disassembly. I'd say if the laptop is still under warranty, get it serviced.

edit: Question... when you operate the release lever, does the light go out next to the Ultrabay?

On my thinkpad releasing the latch does nothing, putting it back prompts a message from Windows Vista that USB device can safely be removed from this computer but when all of a sudden Windows realizes the device has already been reconnected it brings up an AutoPlay prompt.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.
