T20 XP Driver problem (pic)

#1 Post by catscam » Fri Jan 11, 2008 2:47 am

Hello everyone! I just upgraded a T20 from Win98 to WinXP & almost everything is running great. Except for 2 things, anyone know what driver I’m missing in device manager from the picture below? And my other problem is, although I have sound & have the volume control in the system tray. When razing or lowering with the volume on-board buttons on the T20 no longer show the graphical bar display on the screen. Would this be a volume driver I would need or a program I do need to install to get the display back. Could it be the two are related?

Thanks for the help. :D

The volume graphic bar you can download from IBM/Lenovo site.. ..There's a bunch of them for XP, you should check each one out... I'm not sure, but I THINK to specific one you're looking for is the 'On screen graphical display for Windows'...

The unknown device could be nothing OR could be a USB driver thats missing..A wireless card( if you're using one)? The Ethernet card? If you are using an external mouse? I wouldn't worry about it until something you need doesn't work. Then just find the driver for that device and load it, then that error should go away...When you go to the IBM site and download the XP drivers and software you need that may fix the 'unknown device' error......

Here's the site...Just fill in what type of machine you have...

Since I don't see an Ethernet card listed, i am going to say that it might be your Network/Ethernet card. Have you changed out any of the components yourself? Take a look at this list and see if any of them are your card. If you need to, you might want to power off the T20, flip it over and open up the Mini-PCI slot to see which card is physically installed on your T20. You can use the Hardware Maintenance Manual to assist you.

The on screen display is part of the HotKey driver, which is available here.

P.S.
As stated in my Mod Edit to your original post...welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the help guys got the audio display working, but now that I open up the Mini-PCI modem slot under the laptop. There are 2 plugs on the card one small 2 pin plug & a larger multi pin plug that is disconnected. Should it be disconnected? Is it modem or Ethernet card only, one connected at a time? Or should I just connect them both & maybe that will fix the problem in Device manager.

But I don’t see how to pop out the card, will the card slide out or is it a setup like the Ram that pops up the card after releasing some pins?

And sorry about the no picture warning tfflivemb2, I thought the rule was if the pic was 1-Meg or over, & with the pic only being 40k I didn’t think it applied. But I’ll add a warning no matter the size from now on.

Some models of the T20 can come with a combination ethernet and modem card. Others will have just the modem. The modem connector is the two pin, 3mm wide one near the corner of the MiniPCI bay. The ethernet connector is about 18mm (0.75") wide and is closer to the center of the bay. If your card has the matching white connector that is nearly an inch wide, then your ethernet is disconnected.

The card is removed exactly like the memory modules; there's two metal arms which need to be pulled slightly "outward" from the center of the module and then it (should) swing upwards. The short length of ribbon cable for the modem connector and the larger ethernet connector may get in the way of the card lifting up.

Thanks rkawakami there was a mettle cover on the modem that was confusing me. But now that I removed the plate & lifted the modem I see there’s no place for the unconnected plug to connect to. So I’m guessing this is only a modem & not combo card, which makes me wonder what is that plug for? And could that be the reason I have a problem in Device Manager?

Because a picture is worth a thousand words.

Ah, yes, the MiniPCI lockdown plate. Forgot about that...

The picture appears to show a modem-only MiniPCI card. The connector inside the laptop is for the ethernet port. goofyGAguy has referenced one of the combo cards which will have the matching ethernet jack for that plug. You may need specific drivers for that eBay card as it doesn't look like the ones I normally see inside T20-T22 systems.

As far as causing the Device Manager error, I can't be sure. If your previous OS (Win98) did not show this then I don't know why XP would. To add a little bit more information, what is the TYPE number of your system? Located on a bar code label on the bottom of the system, it should start with 2647- or 2648-. The last three characters will say what the initial configuration of the system was when it left the factory. You can plug the TYPE number into this page:

Support & Downloads

in the Product Number field. That will lead to a page which will display something like this:
Product: ThinkPad T21 2647-4AU [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: PIII 800MHz (256KB), 128MB RAM, 20.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 8x-2.3x DVD, Intel combo, TV out, Li-Ion Battery, W98
In the case of my 4AU, "Intel combo" means the ethernet/56K modem MiniPCI card. You may also want to update your profile at this site and include this type number in your signature line as it will help when asking questions about your system in the future.
