Noisy fan

Any remedies to this other than replacement? It's just an annoying whine.

well a air can to blow out the dust should go a long way... maybe a drop of oil in the right places too.

Illustrated guide available: "How to fix a laptop noisy

#3 Post by Johan » Fri Jan 11, 2008 1:17 pm

Well, there is actually a way to "oil" the fan to make it less noisy; have a look in the thread: How to fix a T4x Noisy fan the hard(WARE) way which points to a very, very fine guide (also by FTC) at How to fix a laptop noisy FAN.

Beware of which type oil you use - some are more suitable than others (forum.thinkpads.com user jamiphar has experience with what type of oil is best; I also don't know anything about this).

PS: A brand new, low-noise "long" fan for a T42(/p), the M10 that also cools the GPU (FRU 13R2657) cost less than $30 as an original spare-part directly from IBM. Maybe worth considering to get a brand new one, in stead hassling with "oiling" your old fan?

Best regards,

Johan

I agree with Johan - if your fan hasn't developed a whine but has had this from the start, then replacement with the quieter M10 long fan is the answer.

I have done this with both of my T42's, including one whose original short fan was replaced by IBM with a noisy model of long fan - an FRU# 91P9252. You'll want to avoid this fan as well as the 13N5442, and use the latest model of long fan that runs quiet. I used the 13R2657, and others on the forum can probably recommend newer model numbers.
