t61p LCD brightness

I am not happy with my t61p's 1680x1050 lcd brightness and color accuracy (15 inch widescreen). Besides t61p I am using t43 (15 inch 1024x768) and an external Dell LCD monitor. t61p is much darker than t43 and looks completely pathetic next to dell 2007fpw.

Has anyone tried to talk to warranty support regarding screen brightness on t61p?

comparing your T61p's 200 cd/m^2, 6-bit, TN display to an external 300 cd/m^2, 8-bit, S-IPS display isn't exactly fair.   this is like comparing a bicycle to an automobile.

almost all TN notebook displays appear dark under certain lighting conditions or when comparing to an external display.   after buying a thinkvision L220x i almost hate using my T61p's internal panel because it's darker, less accurate, less vibrant, and viewing angles aren't as good.   unfortunately these faults are due to current display technology.   even the infamous IPS displays found on older thinkpads look like crap (in my opinion) when compared to external IPS/S-IPS/S-PVA displays.   but, i agree that T61 widescreens, for whatever reason, do look dimmer than what their luminance ratings suggest.

unless your backlight is abnormally dim, warranty won't be able to help.   the problem is the technology and low quality of current displays.

Do you also see color accuracy issue on your t61p? I don't know how to describe it, but it seems like color balance is bad. I tried to monkey with nvidia control panel, but I could not get it right.

Perhaps I need to look for a hardware device for color calibration?

Do you mean washed out picture during video playback?

No, colors in any graphics (including pictures) are slightly off, kind of like you would have in photos with bad white balance. Seemed like bumping green a notch helped a bit, but they still don't look right.

the samsung panel in my T61p looks slightly blue without calibration.   hardware calibration will fix color accuracy but colors still won't be as vibrant, accurate, or of as broad of range as on an external display.

if you're doing color-critical work then an external display is mandatory regardless of your notebook's internal display "quality".
