[T41p] Fan Error even after a fan replacement

#1 Post by vagabon » Sat Jan 12, 2008 6:29 am

Hello,

I have a problem with my laptop. It didn't boot with a "Fan Error" message. I replaced the fan with one bought on ebay. But the laptop didn't boot again. The seller told me that the fan was tested and worked perfectly.

Does it mean than the fan controller on system board is damaged? In that case, is it possible to repair the fan controller of the system board?

Thank you for your help.

Pierre

Welcome to the forum!

You can search the forum and see a few other cases of motherboards with bad fan controllers. There is no known fix at this time other than replacing the motherboard.

Sorry to deliver this news.

FYI, if you need to boot the machine for one or two minutes, you can press the ESC key when you get the FAN ERROR message. This will bypass the error and allow you to boot. DO NOT keep the machine on for more than a couple of minutes or you will destroy the CPU!

I was prepared for such a news. I just have to looking for a new motherboard.

Thank you for the tip. It will help me to save important data. I can use a vacuum to force the rotation of the fan during backup

I'm not saying this is your problem, but people have been known to buy "tested" used fans that were bad. If you know someone with one you can borrow, try it.
