T30 Ram Modules

#1 Post by Edwardo » Sun Jan 13, 2008 6:39 am

I'm interested in a ram upgrade for my Thinkpad (2366 7U3) that has Win XPP-SP2 as the operating system. Where can I go to get good quality memory modules at resonable prices? What should I be looking for as an inexperienced consumer? Are there certain specifications that are unique to the T30 that I have? Would appreciate some good advise.

Sorry, I'm very new at this. Just signed up yesterday.

Can you help me on where to purchase good quality memory modules?

2 x Crucial PC2700 on EBay

or

512MB PC2700 at Crucial

Recommend 1GB total RAM for XP. You can also use one stick of PC2700 but it is likely to be more expensive.

The ebay items are different than what Crucial is saying I should have in my T30. They are P/N CT6464X335 at a $40 savings. Seems like a nice deal. However, the P/N Crucial is listing that I should use is: CT650034 for 512MB of memory. Would it be acceptable to install something different than what is specified? What are the differences if you don't mind going into it?

They could potentially be the same part. Crucial does not advertise the part numbers on their RAM. The number you referred to is a skew number for inventory, and would not actually appear on the module anywhere. I'd work out a warranty with the seller based on compatibility and passing memtest86 in your machine. 7 days to return it after receipt is fair.

Crucial list this ebay item as: CT6464X335 200-pin SODIMM DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64

The only difference I see in the memory listed for the T30 is that there are no mention of 64Meg X 64 in their description. Is that something significant to look out for?

If the part number is the same, the fact that '64Meg x 64' is missing in the description is irrelevant. Go for it, it's a nice deal.

Ed, I've got a 512MB strip (Kingston) that I just pulled out of my T30. Let me know if you have an interest in it. Not sure how much MB you're looking for.

Because of the well reported memory slot problem of the T30, I would suggest going for a 1GB chip instead of a pair of 512MB. With the 1GB, plus your existing 256MB, you will have 1.25GB if both slots are working fine. If one slot fails, you will still have an acceptable 1GB.
T30 (2366-86U): 2.0GHz, 1.25 GB mem, 100 GB HD, DVD RW, Broadcom b/g wifi, Win XP/Ubuntu
T41 (2373-155): upgraded to 1.8GHz, 1.5 GB mem, 100 GB HD, DVD RW, Atheros 108 super G, Win XP/Ubuntu
T60 (2007-68U):2.0GHz, 2.5GB mem, 500 GB HD, DVD RW, intel abg wifi, Win 7/Ubuntu

I just received my 1gb ram from ebay (US Modular) and what a difference in the speed of my T30. Like night and day. I have a bad slot so the 1gb was the way to go.

Crucial CT650034

#14 Post by Whoosh » Fri Jan 25, 2008 10:04 pm

I ordered 2X512MB CT650034 from Crucial.com recently (after doing their Crucial memory scan thingie) and when I got it ...on the modules it was marked "CT6464X335X". I contacted them and they say it's correct, CT650034 is just some stocking number *sigh*

Thanks for your response. Someone else thought as much the very same thing. I've since purchased a pair of 512MB modules from another source but will not be disappointed if they have those numbers on them, thanks to you.
