T60 - Microsoft Virtual PC

#1 Post by sarahturned » Sun Jan 13, 2008 11:55 pm

Has anyone successfully managed to have a host (XP or Vista) machine with a guest (XP or Vista) virtual pc on a T60 workstation?

I set it up, but each time I doubleclick the guest, I lose network access (Internet and Intranet) on both the guest and host.

I've tried updating drivers, disabled offload, reinstalled virtual machine network service, made sure that that in virtual pc settings, that the network card is enabled, but regardless of what I tried, I just can't get network access on either the guest or host.

Each time I lose it, I have to close the guest, reboot and then network connectivity starts on the host again.

I did install VMWare this afternoon and without a single issue, both the guest and host had network access.

My preference would be to not use this product if I can avoid it and I'd rather stick with Virtual PC.

Thank you.

I have had great luck with VMware 6.02 with XP host and LInux guest. If you are using wireless, the guest needs usb linkage.

I did not have good luck with two other free virtual programs....so, I confirm the inconsistency between different vm software.
HP Omnibook 800CT 166Mhz Pentium I with PuppyLinux (just to see if it is still possible!)

It's good to see I'm not the only one having issues with Virtual PC.
I should have said, I'm just trying to get ethernet access through a lan cable.

Just to rule out conflicts, I also disabled wireless on the host but that didn't work either.

Me, on the other hand, use MS Virtual PC in number of desktops and Thinkpads for number of different reasons. They all work quite well for me. Currently I am using 64bit Virtual PC installed in my T60 running Vista 64 bit and run various Windows images ( XP, W2k, DOS 6, etc ). MS Virtual PC works pretty well for my purpose. Only problem I recall is when trying to install Linux I bump into lots of issues. There seems to have work arounds, tips, etc floating on the web but I just gave up very quickly, as I don't really need that environment. I just want to "play" with Linux.

What type of problem do you have?

I can install virtual pc without issue, I can setup a VM (tried Vista and XP) without issue as well.

Once everything is setup, I doubleclick the virtual pc and as soon as I do, I lose my network connectivity on both the guest and the host.

In my original msg, I believe I summarised some of the troubleshooting steps I've taken.

For now, I'm just trying to get the wired network up and running, I have disabled the wifi.

I've had nothing but problems with Virtual PC. If you don't want to pay for VMware Workstation (great product) then I would sugguest Virtual Box (free). Good luck.

I had good experiences running windows virtual machines on virtual pc.
But at the end I prefered the free vmware server as it can run my same virtual machines either on a windows or linux host. I preferred it over Virtualbox as networking seems to be easier with it (don't have to worry about setting up a bridge, etc ...)

I have a Vista host machine running XP pro using VPC 2007. I have VPC set up to connect via NAT(shared networking) for my netwrok access. I have had no problems as of yet.

I'll second VirtualBox. I run it in both Linux and Vista. I can use the same XP and 2000 Pro virtual machines in either Linux or Vista.
People freak when you have Vista, XP ands 2000 all running at the same time. 8)

I run Virtual PC most of the time on three different machines without any problems. I'd blame something else is misconfigured. Do you use "Shared connection" in virtual machine ?
