#1 Post by oobe » Mon Nov 22, 2004 10:34 pm

Hi I got Dead screen on my t22 so i ordered a new LCD inverter as it was cheaper than getting a whole new screen it did not work so i went and bought a second hand lcd screen to replace it i tested it first it was working fine i then replaced it at home and it still does not work could it be the ribbon cable behing the lcd that is damaged the symptoms are that the screen is completly blank so i boot it using a crt monitor and then i can see a very dim display using the fn-f7 function key which switched displays

I think I'm gonna create Gibbs' Law - "It's ALWAYS the ribbon cable."

Unless of course you dropped it off a desk and the screen is cracked in half... Then it's the screen AND the ribbon cable.

what do you base this on irony of life or statistical info lol
could it be anything else like the motherboard cause if it is that beyond my scope of repair

Hi, i report my experience.

I have a T21 with a blank screen (no backlight).
So I supposed it is an inverter problem and I replaced it with an used one purchased on eBay.
But since the screen still did not light, my attention went to the ccfl. So I checked the lamp and I found it was working fine.
At this point I supposed that also the "new" inverter was faulty.
I used a multimeter to find (or better, to try to find :) ) the pinout of the inverter and I got a partial result: I found it is powered with 12V, moreover there are three other pins that I suppose are for intensity control.
So I checked the inverter board with an external power source. And it did not work.
But now my doubt is that it need also a control power on the other 3 pins.

To verify this idea I checked the flat lcd ribbon cable, but with my surprise I found that the three pins on the inverter side of the cable have no connection (continuity) with the system board side of the cable. Now there are two ways:
1- do not exist intensity control on the inverter and the one that i bought is really faulty, or
2- the ribbon cable is interrupted and so cannot power the inverter in the right way.

According the Gibb's Law, the second option should be the right one.

at least, do someone have the inverter (10L1402) and/or the flat cable (27L0519) pinouts?

I think that across all global thinkpad forums and news groups, there must be at least 100.000 users who suddenly have a blank or non-working screen. (including myself).

Since it is in almost all cases that damend LCD cable, I can imagine that IBM is making a fortune on after-sales.
Could even imagine, that there is a pre-fabricated spot on the LCD cable, that will crack after a pre-defined time or usage. :-)

My thinkpad dealer had a big box with those cables, they sell ice-cream on hot July days, according to his statements. :-)

Do you think he have also one for me? (cable not ice--cream) :D

Otherwise, where can I purchase the cable? Is eBay reliable? I wouldn't get a used cable that go fault some days after.

What you mean with "their", IBM?
I look at the IBM website shop for p/n 27L0519 but is not available, and also inverter :( .
You can find more other part but not that ones.

Some other idea?
